Official Coaching Search Thread

Post#1 » by blumeany » Thu Jan 3, 2013 3:30 pm

Why not? :D

Thought we could dig for info on the guys that are interviewing.

Here's what I've found so far:

Carmichael - end of season interview: http://www.neworleanssaints.com/media-c ... a1ec7bbde7

Notes: Wasn't very impressed, although I guess I shouldn't expect the guy to be giddy about not being in the playoffs. But honestly, he came off low energy, not very media-savvy, and not what Emery was talking about.

Clements:

Nice little X's and O's video with Brian Billick. Didn't really blow me away though. I was probably more impressed with Billick.

Video of Clements speaking on Ara Parseghian. Again, not seeing much of the energy/personality that Emery said he was looking for.

Haven't found much on MCCoy, Sullivan and Armstrong.

Kyle Shanahan:

Dude looks young enough to play.

Go to the 8:00min mark for local opinion on whether Shanahan is ready to be a HC.

Thanks man.

This thread was needed for the board & the insight on these candidates was needed for me personally. I haven't done my homework on these guys.

My order of preference (right now) of those named/interviewed (right now)

1. Carmichael
2. McCoy
3. Sullivan

Order of those not named (right now) or not interviewed (right now)

1. Holmgren
2. Chip Kelly
3. Doug Marrone

Clemens
Carmichael

are my choices from the first time HC coach pool

Holmgren
Gruden

from the retreads

We will probably be drafting a QB after next year so Id like someone in place that has actually groomed a young QB

I dunno, he *might* be in over his head, but so far I'm sort of liking the idea of Kyle Shanahan.

- Young offensive mind
- Energetic
- Hands-on
- Was able to bring up RGIII pretty well.

I feel like we'd be tapping into a really good, young coach early.

If he's too much of a project, then my list would probably be:

1. Clements (although I'm not sure if he brings that dynamic Emery is looking for)
2. Arians (Lots of experience with good QB's, brought up Luck pretty well)
3. Carmichael (New Orleans has been a top offense for years now, same goes for New England)
4. Holmgren (decent record, plenty of postseason appearances with GB and Sea...just not sure if he still has it)

Guys I would avoid:

1. Gruden - take a look at his spectactular flameout. Did 'ok' in a weak division with Oakland, went to TB and won a Super Bowl, but most of his former players attribute that to Dungy. His remaining years in TB were god awful.

2. Cowher - at first I really like the idea, but he doesn't bring anything to the table offensively. Also, the way that Tomlin has pretty much carried on without missing a beat makes me question Cowher's value.

3. McCoy - only credit seems to be that he 'won' with Tebow and Kyle Orton had a banner year under him. Otherwise, I can't give him any credit for this season, as Manning is clearly running the offense.

4. Chip Kelly - he's got a specialized offense that may not mesh with Cutler and he's also inexperienced when it comes to the Pro game and all organizational aspects there are to it. He'll probably be the biggest gamble if any NFL team decides to make him their HC.

Of those named, I would like to see Clements, Sullivan, or Shanahan. I would also like Gruden.

I would avoid Chip Kelly, I don't like his offense and the way he runs his team, Holmgren, no idea where his head is, and possibly even Carmichael, because I don't like how pass-heavy the Saints offense is.

I think there are reports that he has already committed to returning to the Saints.

So what is the updated list of coaches the Bears have actually contacted?

Cuz right now I have it as-
Tom Clements- Packers
Joe Decamillis- Cowboys
Mike Sullivan - Bucs
Keith Armstrong - Falcons
Mike Mccoy- Broncos
Pete Carmichael - Saints
Bruce Arians- Colts

In no particular order.

@RapSheet

#Bears are 1st team to put in an interview request for #Colts OC Bruce Arians, I'm told. Won't be the last. #Chargers among those interested

Thanks
Will edit. This guy moves up on my list.
Question to you tho, have the Bears formally expressed interest in Reid or Holmgren?

Reid is close to signing with the Chiefs. Holmgren said he would listen if any teams approached, and I don't think any teams have given an interview yet. The better question, why would you want either of those guys?

Because they are both great offensive minds who have a long track record of working with and getting great QB play.

Holmgren, as a coach only, is by far the best available. I'd kill to get him to Chicago to work with Jay and this offense.

Andy Reid may work well with QBs, but you saw how he destroyed the offense in Philly. He has a top 5 RB in LeSean McCoy yet puts the ball in the hands of Vick being protected by an O-Line almost as bad as ours to throw it 35+ times a game.
