Sean Jensen@seankjensen
Rod Marinelli not returning as #Bears defensive coordinator, according to @ZachZaiman. Lot of respect for in-house candidate Jon Hoke
5m Sean Jensen @seankjensen
As I noted yesterday, Marc Trestman was open to having Marinelli stay, but Rod is very close with Lovie Smith and preferred new start
4m Sean Jensen @seankjensen
While Marinelli is under contract, Trestman certainly doesn't want any coach around who doesn't want to be here, especially 1 so influential
Sean Jensen @seankjensen
#Bears players will be devastated. But if Jon Hoke is promoted -- and everyone believes he's more than ready -- that would be welcomed
Damn!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It seems that Jon Hoke is the in-house candidate, while Brian VanGorder is also surfacing as a replacement:
3m Sean Jensen @seankjensen
One name to keep an eye on: Auburn defensive coordinator Bryan VanGorder. He was at Wayne State with GM Phil Emery and has strong resume.
1m Sean Jensen @seankjensen
#Bears GM Phil Emery was also in Atlanta with Brian VanGorder, where he was linebackers coach and defensive coordinator of Falcons.
Sean Jensen @seankjensen
If not defensive coordinator, Brian VanGorder could be a linebackers coach since Bob Babich (Lovie Smith's brother in law) won't remain

Now it shows me the Bears really did have to make a change.
With all these spineless jellyfish they had as coaches.

Unless they were told that they were relieved of their duties, both Marinelli & Toub have really disappointed me.

Marinelli’s next destination could quite possibly be the Cowboys and soon.
The move would reunite Marinelli with defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. They paired together for 10 years in Tampa Bay before Marinelli took over as head coach in Detroit in 2006.
http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/ ... on-the-wayInstead of accepting a DC position here, I guess Marinelli is comfortable being a D-Line coach for the Cowboys until Lovie becomes a HC again in a couple years........if then.

Could Hoke be servicable DC, idk. Our corners are top notch.
If there's one thing we learned from the Lovie era, is that you don't get cute with ur DC.

Its for the best. I never liked when new coaches come in and have to retain holdovers. I prefer a clean slate fresh eyes and the new guy having full attention of the inmates. That way things that need change can happen quicker with less funk in the air. If not schematically, the Bears defense is going to be in transition at least to a younger fresher unit over time. Lets get started. The defense ran out of gas down the stretch for a couple years now. Better to be a little early or on time with the transitioning than too late.

It would make me comfortable if the Bears DC search was as extensive as the HC search.
Not just go with a guy because Trestman knows him.

I thought Trestman was open to keeping them. I don't understand their reasoning... you leave your job as a major coordinator of the Chicago Bears to go be a Defensive Line coach for the Cowboys... hoping that one day your friend will get a job again and MAYBE hire you? Sounds ridiculous.

Marinelli probably did not get the Buddy Ryan deal. His own kingdom. So he walked.

Ridiculous indeed.

Well the new guy says the type of defense he runs will be determined by personnell. Leaving open the possibility of a 3/4 because the personell makeup is a fluid situation. Good to hear. I think there will be personal favorites gone from this defense while the new regime retools younger. Who is brought is is totally unknown. BPAs without rigid ideology towards body types y'all. I think this is what Marinelli didnt want to deal with.

I don't think we have the personnel for a 3/4. Shea could start and Peppers could move to LB but we don't have the linemen. Melton can mover over to DE but we'd have to find a second DE and a DT.
I would stick to the 4/3 fill in the few missing pieces that it has, mostly depth, because defense definitely isn't the problem.

I'd like to add, I don't think all these changes will effect the defense negatively when the season starts. This reminds me a lot of when Rex Ryan left the Ravens. Their defense was pissed they were still a top 5 defense. If Hoke is the new DC then he's been under some great teachers so I'm not that worried about the D.

Personell changes. Trestman would have said just what you said if personell wasnt going to change. He will take the best players available and so will Emery. Where the chips fall after that is where they fall. That's what the new guys are saying anyway.
I do know one thing. If the Bears go hybrid or 3/4 Urlacher assuming he returns would be more than cool with it. He dislikes playing the tampa 2

Bring back Ron Rivera as the DC!
Would anyone be opposed to this and isn't Rivera not under contract?

Plus I disagree about the defense not being a problem. They can't finish a season. This is the pattern now. So in the process of being more youthful and unrigid in player types, this defense is not the Marinelli religion anymore.

This makes sense.

He's currently the Head Coach for the Carolina Panthers. If not for that small detail, I would have +1 your post in complete agreement

I thought he got fired, contract finished?
Well damn if it didn't.
If he was available hypothetically, would you want him?
