Brian Urlacher Contract Negotiation Thread
Per the request of Biggie, here's a thread for everything regarding Brian's contract negotiations.
First update:
Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) tweeted at 3:51 PM on Sat, Feb 23, 2013:
Not a shocker, but Bears and Brian Urlacher's agents have met here in Indy to discuss a new deal.

Re: Brian Urlacher Contract Negotiation Thread
I'm wondering what numbers are being discussed. Hopefully, Urlacher realizes that he's nosing down production-wise & his speed is disappearing in front of our eyes.

Just after his first tweet. Sounds like good news

Re: Brian Urlacher Contract Negotiation Thread
I base that judgment on Emery's statement Thursday that "we'll work through Brian and his agents on" his future. If the decision had been made to move on -- one that would be entirely justifiable, by the way -- I'm guessing Emery would have said so by this point. The only benefit for stringing along a franchise icon would be to hide the interest in potential replacements, be it in free agency or the draft.
But Emery also made clear that he won't treat Urlacher as a typical and interchangeable commodity. "He'll never be slighted," Emery said. "I have too much respect for him."

I heard today on am1000 that he's looking in the range of $5m. The irony

That means that his agent could have possibly read your Superbowl Game rules..........or maybe you are his agent in your real-life occupation

Re: Brian Urlacher Contract Negotiation Thread
$5 million? Bye bye Brian.
The Bears would be crazy to pay him that money. We're not obligated to pay him that much just because he was once our franchise player on defense. He won't get that money anywhere else.
If we give Melton the tag, and Urlacher gets 5, that's just about the extent of our FA signings.
I figured something like this would happen. Just get the cheaper solution for the same production -- Nick Roach.

hmmmm...$5m? where did I here that number before?
The 34-year-old middle linebacker just finished the final year of his contract and made $7.5 million last season. He wants to play at least two more seasons and likely wants a new deal in the $5 million-per-year range on par with recent contracts earned by veteran linebackers Ray Lewis (since retired) and London Fletcher.

Agreed. At 5 million he can walk.

I'd keep Urlacher for another year or so, to mentor DeCicco as the MLB of the future.

If the Bulls do, you would be complaining to much to ever hear it.
NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

The bears still have plenty of money to cut. I think Brian will be getting some of Kellen Davis' money don't you think?

Re: Brian Urlacher Contract Negotiation Thread
Just a couple years ago, the Bears would not have made any other moves in free-agency until they had Urlacher re-signed. This year, we're tossing money around to other players while he sways in the wind.
I think that it's a statement to him from the new bosses that he's no longer a top priority.

I'm sure that you're right. I was just pointing out how far & how quickly he's moved down on the food chain.

Re: Brian Urlacher Contract Negotiation Thread
Would love it if Urlacher went to the Vikes! Then we could shred their D up the middle like everyone did to ours. And as a wise Twitter scribe pointed out, missing the playoffs 5 of 6 years makes you wonder if you need a new 'heart and soul'.
I'll always appreciate what Brian did for the Bears, but I think his situation is just like Kreutz's was. My guess is that he'll get a nice payday somewhere and then end up retiring.
