When Devin Aromashodu was last a Chicago Bear (2010) he was the only Bears wide receiver taller than Earl Bennett’s 6 feet. He comes back to the Bears this week as part of one projected opening-day roster scenario that could include four wideouts 6-2 or bigger.

Brandon Marshall, 6-4. Alshon Jeffery, 6-3. Aromashodu, 6-4. Rookie speed receiver Marquess Wilson, 6-4. Throw in tight end Martellus Bennett, 6-6, and the Bears have the potential for creating the kinds of mismatches in the secondary that they are used to dealing with from the Green Bay Packers.

Aromashodu hasn’t made the roster. Neither has Wilson. But the Bears are on track to have the biggest receiving group in their history.

Can you call a passing game.... power passing? Secondary mauling? Emery and Trestman have built a jumbo group together. Aromashodu's addition makes it not an accident even if we pretty much knew what they were doing.

Ehhhhh...what were they doing again?

I liked what Aromashodu brought to the table the last go-around, and I'm glad we brought him back.

Not slow, but there isnt much speed over the top there. Marquess Wilson isn't a speed guy running a 4.51 40. My guess is Aromashodu is being brought in to provide some speed. Jonny Knox would have been a solid speed guy to provide that deep threat with this group.

Emery has to take some blame for Rodriguez. We can't afford to go around wasting 4th round picks on players.

IIRC, we kinda reached for Rodriguez & took him earlier than we had to last year.

Looks like the Rodriguez comparison to Aaron Hernandez was kind of close. Rod was a less prolific player and less prolific criminal.

I would love to have a speed guy, but Cutler's only request upon being traded here was for the FO to provide some WRs with height. You have to remember that our WR core were all small guys a few years ago.

Just go back & watch most of Cutler's INTs throughout his Bears career. They were either passes too high for the WR or mis-communication between Cutler & our WRs. Don't get me wrong, he threw some bad ones, but the majority were really not his fault.

Of course, the media hates him, so he was never excused like Romo & others do. How many times have analysts/commentators blamed the WR/TE after an INT by Romo, Rodgers, Manning, etc...?

Yeah Cutler gets too much criticism & it's weird because he's somewhat of an introvert..or maybe that's actually why he gets it.

I happen to think he's a good guy & a good QB. I do however think we. Need at least one guy of the Tavon Austin mold.

Agreed with everything here. And although I like what Emery did this off-season, I'm pretty disappointed we didn't get a speed receiver. But Marshall, Jeffery, Bennett and Bennett is a pretty good combo. Hopefully Wilson can step in if someone gets injured (*cough cough* Earl) and be effective. I do think Emery will address speed at receiver by next season.

I'm willing to bet we still see Hester used on offense in some fashion. I don't think he'll be a "wide receiver" or an every series player, but I just don't believe he's only gonna be a return guy. Everyone knows he's a weapon and our last administration was just too dumb to figure out how to use him. I bet Trestmans got some back pocket plays in the works. I know that doesn't address our speed receiver issue, but it could be a small supplement.

I agree that his WR days are over, but I believe (and hope) that he won't be cut.

What will probably save him is his low contract, though.

I been rooting for Anderson almost as much as Jeffrey(if not a tiny bit more).

After I heard Joe turned down a chance to be on the final 53 man roster from 2 teams..I knew I loved the guy.

I want Joe to get his shot & become absolutely amazing.

Anyone know Anderson's 40 time? I read he's a speed and quickness guy and that he has a 42 inch verticle (WTF???) but I can't find a 40 time.

He doesn't really have a lot of football miles on him. I know there were reports earlier this offseason speculating weather he may get cut. He still has good value in IMO, and though he isn't practicing with the receivers, he is still relative insurance in that regard. Word was that he was working special teams as well (beyond returns)

I've emailed Larry Mayer and John Mullin several times and those dicks never reply. Does anybody know if we receive a compensatory pick for the Knox situation? I seem to remember reading once that you could get one if a player is forced to retire due to injury.

We should sign Vonta Leach to replace Rodriguez. With Forte our run game would be dominate and he can catch the ball.

This may sound controversial, but I'd have liked a speed guy who could have replaced Hester. Not necessarily this year, but next year I think he needs to walk.

I'm a big fan of Hester's and enjoy what he's accomplished as a returner over the years, but he's not a wide receiver and, with the new kickoff rules established last year, he's pretty much reduced to a punt returner only. The NFL screwed him with those rules. The returner position now needs to either be filled by someone who has another role on the team (DB, RB or WR who takes meaningful snaps at those positions) or someone who is making near minimum money (rookie contract money) to allow us to use that capspace somewhere else.

BOURBONNAIS — The Bears’ defensive backs are under attack.

They’re dealing with receivers’ long, outstretched arms. Their agility and quickness to box out. Their leaping ability and speed.

They’re getting a good idea during training camp of what the Bears’ new-look offense wants to do to opponents: get after them relentlessly with three big receivers in Brandon Marshall (6-4, 230 pounds) and Alshon Jeffery (6-3, 216) and tight end Martellus Bennett (6-6, 265).

Few teams can throw that many big and mobile targets at a defense at one time. Or as veteran defensive back Kelvin Hayden put it, “We’ve got some trees out there.”

And those “trees” play with an edge, an aggressive bravado that can be infuriating. Take all the scrums with Bennett last week as an example.

“[Bennett’s] a guy that’s maybe 6-4, 6-5. Me being 5-11, there’s a disadvantage right there,” said Hayden, who tussled with Bennett last week. “There’s going to be mismatches come this season.”

Coach Marc Trestman calls his offense one “that’s got to get the right matchups.” Numerous formations, personnel groupings and plenty of motion will be used to get that for Marshall, Jeffery and Bennett. Trestman will force nickel backs, safeties and linebackers to guard them.

“If I’m on the other side of the ball, it’s more about technique than anything else,” Trestman said. “Your techniques have to be perfect to cover a guy like that, and then it’s about a contested throw, getting a hand in and running through him and getting the things done that you have to do fundamentally to get it done.”
