Thayer: Shea Mac can be Baby Watt

Tom Thayer wrote:I am going to make an undersized bold statement (about Shea McClellin. He has the characteristics to be a mini No. 99 in Houston — J.J. Watt. He has the versatility and the movement and the hand-fighting and the athleticism with his feet where he could be a Baby Watt. Does that mean swatting passes down? Yep. Does that mean intercepting passes that are meant to be screen passes? Yep. Does that mean rushing from the inside in a stand-up position and beating a guard-center matchup? Yes. Does it mean he's going to get a sack from both sides? Yes. I see things in Shea that can be cultivated. He can be put in the right position in the right matchup. I don't know if I just got caught up in watching him run around in OTA's but I do have a big expectation for Shea this year.

That's a pretty bold statement. If Shea becomes that good, then this defense will dominate.

That's an incredibly bold statement. Watt is the most dominant D-lineman in a while. To be even close to that would give us the unquestioned best DE combo in the NFL.

Thayer lost credibility with me after all the hype over Williams and Carimi. He's just hoping like the rest of us.

Well it did take Watt a couple of years to become truly dominant, which also seems to be the case with Shea (taking time for development... not becoming dominant). I don't think he'll be anywhere near the production of Watt, though. In fact, I'd be estatic with 8 sacks and 10 swatted passes for the next season.

What does he mean by mini. Watt just smaller? Or mini in production.
Regardless, Watt can be the GOAT d-lineman. If anything Shea should be compared to Jared Allen.

It took watt a couple years to become a top 5 defender. He was hard to play against ever since he's been in the league.

I don't even think Shea can be better than Wotton. And I don't mean in a bad way because I think Wotton can make a couple probowls.

Thayer is obviously just hyping up every first round pick the Bears bring in. Less analysis, more fan development. The sad truth.

Idk what this means but it's very constructive

I'll believe it when I see it.

If he is baby watt, baby allen, or baby Peppers, I think any of us would be thrilled. I still feel he is not a Defensive end. He gets pushed around on running plays. He looks a lot more comfortable when we stand him up. I still think LB is his best position.
Regardless I want him to be a stud at any position he plays.
LETS GO BEARS!

I don't know... the analysis seemed very specific and was in line with the strengths we've always heard about McClellan. The only thing "hyped" may be the comparison to Watts.
But McClellan is good with his hands and has good footwork and speed. I also thought he did better than expected against the run last year (and maybe not quite as good of a pass rusher as I expected). His demon is size and strength. He's not exactly going to overpower a tackle and push him into a backfield.

Baby Watt....no.
Speed rusher off the edge, most likely

I think Shea can be a very productive player, but Watt is arguably the best player in the game, not just the best defensive player. He was legitimately in the MVP race last year, behind Manning and Peterson of course.
He'll have a good career but will never be close to Watt, or even baby Watt. It's not necessarily a knock on Shea but more of a testament to how good Watt actually is.

People are raving about the play he made today. Called it Watt-like. Had an awesome pick 6 off of Jay.
