The biggest current trend in offense could be making it’s way to a franchise known traditionally for its defense. And, more recently, for having a quarterback who lacks the mobility to pull off the biggest current trend in offense.
According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, however, the Bears apparently plan to roll out the read-option in 2013. Sort of.
Biggs explains that the Bears have been using the play-action fake from shotgun formation that launches the read-option running play as the first step in the quarterback moving outside the pocket in search of a throwing lane. In theory, quarterback Jay Cutler also could run the ball after the fake.
“Jay has the skill set to do just about everything, anything,” coach Marc Trestman said. “We are trying to give him the things he has had the most success with first.
“Whether we’ll do it, I don’t know. We’ve studied it.”
It doesn’t need to be used very often in order to force opposing defenses to be ready for it, and in turn to compel them to spend time preparing for the possibility of seeing it.
“There is no question Jay is athletic enough [to run the read-option],” backup Josh McCown said. “All three of us could get it done if we needed to. It’s going to have to be a part of [the offense] a little bit because we are going to have to give our defense looks on it because it’s so successful in our league. We’re all waiting to see if the defenses can stop it.”
Until they can, more offenses will be using it. Even those that may not seem like obvious candidates for it.

It makes sense to get Jay out of the pocket and possibly buy him a few extra seconds to read the coverages, but doesn't the QB need to freeze the DE? It's hard for me to imagine this working, but then again, I'm not the coach of an NFL team.

Agreed. I'm fine with implementing more roll-outs, but I don't want to see him running with the ball often.
Jay is not a QB/RB hybrid like the others that run the Read Option.

Re: Jay may run Read Option
Jay Cutler won't run read option, Chicago Bears say
We told you Wednesday morning about the possibility of quarterback Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears running the read option.
On Wednesday afternoon, Cutler was asked how much read option he'll be running in 2013.
"None," he responded matter-of-factly, per CSNChicago.com.
Coach Marc Trestman reiterated as much.
"No, we're not going that way with this offense," Trestman said.
However, Trestman then said the Bears could run read option if they wanted to.
"The thing about Jay on a read option, Jay knows how to get down," Trestman said about Cutler's ability to slide or get out of bounds. "Jay knows how to play the position when he's running out on the field."
Of course, consciously putting Cutler in a position of peril is a questionable move. We've seen how well the Bears' offense has performed without their starter the past several seasons.
Offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer played it closer to the vest, saying he would "never like to divulge" schemes.
To recap: The Bears have the building blocks to run the read option. But they won't be running read option. But they could run read option. But they wouldn't tell us if they planned to run read option.
We're glad it's all clear.

Cutler running a read option would be horrible for the bears. More roll outs is fine though.

Hmmm. Let me see....
1. Cutler running read option going right
2. Delayed Blizing linebacker slips to the right of unaware LT Webb (caught peeking inside)
3. Cutler blown up to to high heaven
4. Season over
No thanks.
