Chris Conte is horrid

Does anyone in the Bears Organization realize that this is probably THE Worst Free Safety in pro football. This guy never seems to break up a long pass and he gets shook by mobile backs on a consistent basis. I've yet to see him come over on a deep pass and either breakup the play or intercept the ball over the receiver. Each and every one of his intercepts seem to come off of tipped passes or overthrows. Too many times he's two or three steps late in preventing the long ball and never seems to stop an open field runner one on one. Is he so slow that he has to play 30 yds downfield on all passing plays.

If Jarrius Byrd of Buffalo is available and plays the position then the Bears should be seriously exploring trading for this guy. Conte needs to be replaced. He and Major Wright in the defensive backfield is just rancid. I can live with Major's shortcomings because they get covered up by the corners and LB's but Conte is just useless.

It feels like the defense has been on a downward spiral. Im hoping Bostic could have solidified it but alas with the loss of Melton it could be too late.

DJ Williams wasn't that bad and the loss of Melton could have been eased had we had better safety play. Go Back to the Detroit game and watch how easily Bush made Conte miss. Also go back through all of his games and watch the deep throws and you will be hard pressed to find any where he actually got over in time to break up the pass or intercept it from the receiver. The last interception by Jennings only happened because Tim came off of his man and covered the back of the receiver. If you watch the replay you can clearly see Conte coming over about 5 yds too late. Good throw by Eli and the Bears would be looking at 3-3. Conte needs to be replaced immediately, especially with the loss of Melton, Collins and now Williams.

To me really only the loss of Melton is consequential.

Nate Collins was filling in admirably. He wasn't going to be Melton but he wasn't a pushover. Now having lost both is detrimental not only to the defense as a whole but to the development of Corey Wooten on the outside. He now has to play out of position and without the safeties help it's going to drain him big time. I do believe if you can get the safeties over the top it would make the QB's hold the ball longer and give the lineman more time to rush.

Well we are 4-2 and atop the division right now so i dont think the bears arent gonna do anything drastic. Like if they couldnt make a real move for a dlineman then they wont make one to replace a perfectly healthy conte.
As long as the bears keep winning he could stay under the radar until then he's not he main concern of the defense right now.
but you are right bettr players on the backend would help the rush. Its actually not that crazy of an idea. Byrd could fill in for either conte or Wright. Both of those players are at the same level imo. If there werent any moves to be made on the dline then safety would be a logical place to upgrade the D in the pass game and the run game.
The same could be said for the LB position as well i imagine. Better talent back there would make qbs hold the ball longer. A trade would have to be weighed in whose the BPA and at what price cuz a LB or a Safety upgrade could help the d in the run and pass.
Honestly i already feel we upgraded at LB going from Williams to Bostic.

I like our safeties. Nobody on our dline is getting doubleteamed. That means opposing olinemen are getting to the second level and blocking our LBs. Our secondary is left to make way to many one in one tackles. That then hurts their coverage.

Reggie Bush made Conte miss?! Oh no! That means Peppers and Briggs and Williams and Wright and Tillman aren't the only ones!

It's not the whiffs on the open field tacklers that bothers me as much as the fact he never seems to be in position to break up the pass to the deep outside receivers. I see so many other safeties making these timely pass breakups and I only see Conte either watching the receiver go into the endzone or making the tackle AFTER the long gain. A free safety is supposed to make the QB question his ability to beat the defenders on the deep throw, not encourage it. Conte is a horrid safety and needs to be replaced.

BTW, both Peppers and Wooten are constantly double teamed. Tucker still continues to try and rush both up the middle right into the double team.

Does anyone still want to argue Conte's skill set after today. I know he wasn't the only guy on defense that stunk but he had an opportunity to make a play that possibly gets the Bears a win and he runs into a small receiver and gets knocked down. The sad part of the catch for the TD is that had Tillman recovered his steps correctly and deflected or intercepted the pass I believe Conte would have been flagged. For the first time in a very long time he was in position and still managed to screw it up. Why isn't Jarrieus Byrd being looked at?

incidental contact mostly due to conte's incompetence.
