And others imo like Hayden.
Hayden wasnt even better than DJ Moore but Moore got himself into the doghouse for bashing cutler during the Webb incident.
And im talking defensively. As stand alone defensive signings. Williams was clearly done couldnt make it through camp. McBride was barely an Nfl caliber player while Idonije was signed by the rival lions for what i understand to be league minimum.
The rest of our defenders were brought in by Lovie and Angelo so who exactly is making these defensive signings in the Emery era and why are they so bad?

I thought, considering what was available, the DJ Williams and Anderson signings were ok. Williams was playing well up until his injury. As for DJ Moore, Frey seems to be doing a fine job in that role. I do agree on Idonije. We could have used him, especially right now. I think Emery had too much confidence in Wooten and McClellin stepping up their game and Peppers playing at least close to his usual self.
Look, the bottom fell out on them. They took a gamble that the defense could pull off one more year and they lost that bet. Just about every thing that could go wrong did:
Starting with the line:
- Peppers declined greatly.
- Melton out for season.
- Collins out for season.
- McClellin has not developed.
- Had to have Wooten play inside to make up for the lack of 3-technique, thus lowering his effectiveness.
Moving on to the linebackers:
- Briggs out for most of the season
- Williams out for the season
- Two rookies forced into starting jobs
Then the secondary:
- Tillman declined and was out for the season
- Safeties have been god awful
So really, it's been Murphy's law with the defense this year.
I expect Emery to focus on three things this offseason:
- the QB situation (i.e., whether to extend Cutler and for how much)
- the O Line (it can still use improvement, especially in the middle)
- the defense - honestly, unless there is a stud O Lineman available, all of their picks should be defensive players.
I'm willing to hold off judgement on Tucker until he's got some actual talent to work with. He's had, effectively, no defensive line this year and no linebackers, which has completely exposed how poor his safeties are. He also came in agreeing to keep the current system in place to placate the players that were supposedly going to play for him. That didn't happen for long. So, it will be interesting to see what Emery can do this offseason and how Tucker will run his own system.
I think the Bears need to get away from the 'Lovie style' of building a defense - which is to prefer faster, smaller linemen. The Bears need some beefy DTs to be able to clog up the running lanes and prevent their defense from being one dimensional.
