Cutler?
Tucker?
Peppers and the rest of the defense?

Our offense is mostly set, which is a good thing. They could go for some young OL talent in the later rounds, but I doubt they'll do anything else.
Maybe pick up a QB in the draft, but is this really the year to do so? With the right moves on defense this team can return to the playoffs, and possibly be a contender.

Obviously, we need to do things to the defense. Draft, FA, whatever. It was horrible this year. The run defense was literally historically bad (worst YPC allowed since 1961). It can't be that bad, ever again. We can seriously use upgrades/young talent at every single position.

Are there any free agents that we might be going after on defense? How much room we'll have will highly depend on what we do with some of our big name guys (Cutler/Peppers/etc)

Our 2014 schedule

In addition to home and away division games against the Lions (7-9), Packers (8-7-1) and Vikings (5-10-1), the Bears will host the Saints (11-5), Buccaneers (4-12), Bills (6-10), Dolphins (8-8) and Cowboys (8-8) and visit the Falcons (4-12), Panthers (12-4), Patriots (12-4), Jets (8-8) and 49ers (12-4). The Bears play all four teams in the AFC East and NFC South as part of the schedule rotation and face the Cowboys and 49ers because they finished in second place in their respective divisions just like the Bears.

We're also picking 14th in the 2014 draft.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe we have normal picks in every round except for 2 6th rounders and no 7th rounder.

Some stats for our skill guys:

Marshall finished with 100 catches for the 5th time in his 8 year career and 2nd time in 2 years on the Bears, to go with 1295 yards and 12 TDs.
Jeffery finished with 89 catches for 1421 yards and 7 TDs. Future is bright for him. 2nd best season yardage wise for a receiver in Bears History, behind last year's Marshall. This year's Marshall was 5th.
Forte finishes with 1339 rushing yards, 594 receiving yards, for a total of 1933 yards from scrimmage and 12 total TDs. Most rushing yards ever by a Bear not named Walter Payton.

Together, our QBs combined for 4450 yards, 32 TDs and 13 INTs. Would easily be the best individual season by a Bears QB ever. Both yards and TDs would be records.

Anyways, enough stats for now.

Like i posted on the other thread.

First. Fire Mel Tucker.
Then. Fire Chris Conte and Adam Podlesh.
And finally bring back Jay and rebuild the defense.

Podlesh wasn't awful until the last few games. I'd agree though, look for an upgrade. Two crappy performances in huge games is probably enough, especially when you weren't that great to begin with.

In order of need:

1. D-Linemen - it all starts up front
2. Linebackers - woeful this year
3. Safeties - Not as big of a deal when the front 7 are good.
4. O-linemen - need replacement for Garza and depth.
5. Speed receiver - if Wilson is not the answer
6. Cornerback - I think Jennings and Bowman are ok, but Frey is a big ?
7. Running back - better backup for Forte
8. D Coordinator - still not 100% sold Tucker is to blame, but if there IS an upgrade out there, a new start may be best.
9. Future QB. - Need someone we can develop.
10. Resign McCown - trustworthy backup.

11. New punter. Podlesh has been very sketchy.

Going to put this year so we keep offseason discussion out of the game thread

emperorjones wrote:#1 - sign Cutler to 5 year deal
#2 - sign Mcccown to a 3 year deal
#3 - sign Slauson to a decent deal.

TURN ATTENTION TO DEFENSE

1.Cut Peppers - save $8m and eat the dead money
2. Tell Tilman bye
3. Tell Meton bye

Sign a starting DE, a Starting DT and a backup RB in FA

Draft a CB in the 1st round
Draft a DT in the 2nd round
Draft a S in the 3rd round
Draft a C in the 4th round.

#2. Tell melton he'll on

Should we really cut ties with Melton if he can be had for cheap-ish? He was great last year.
What kind of contract is Tillman on? He's one year removed from being an All-Pro.
Both Melton and Tillman deserve a shot IMO.

I think Emery won't disappoint this off-season. I actually feel pretty good that most of these guys on defense have expiring contracts. It's brilliant timing. Fire Tucker, bring in the new guy, flush the roster, and rebuild that D with the next defensive genius.

Now on tot he bigger picture, who drafted him, and people think this guy is capapble of rebuilding a defense that was elite when he got here? cmon.
I wasnt the only person who didnt want to give melton the franchise tage The only thing we did this offseason was sign a te and bushrod.

This has to be the offseason of accountability. Tucker should have been gone yesterday.yEAH I GUESS U CANT HAVE PODLESH DOING 20 YARD PUNTS.

Everyone else, wouldnt we like to have them back with competent defensive coaching? Emery has been here two years and hasnt had 1 playoff appearace , where is his accountability. The d sucked form day 1, we couldnt replace tucker midseason, oh did he just sit on his hands like he did with our te situation the year before.

2013
Long, Bostic, Greene, Mills, Washington, Wilson - 2 legit starters. Jury still out on the rest.

2012
McClellin, Jeffery, Hardin, Rodriguez, Frey, McCoy - 3 starters, 3 busts. McClellin is borderline bust unless they find another use for him. Jeffery is looking very good. Jury is still out on Frey - Year 3 will be telling.

So, not too bad for Emery, especially when you consider that the first year he was going off of the previous regime's scouting data for the most part. Not to mention his willingness to gamble a bit like he did with Marshall. Let's see what he can do with this defense. It can only get better, quite literally.

One first round bust means you are incapable of rebuilding a defense?
Giving Melton the franchise tag was a bad idea? He didn't get a chance to prove what kind of idea it was. He played one game. Did you know he was going to play one game?

I'm sure Emery wasn't under the impression that our defense was going to go from 5th to 30th in one offseason. I'm sure he didn't count on the massive amount of injuries, either.

2 years is a pretty insignificant amount of time, too. We won't see the full benefits of some of his moves for years. We were competitive and one victory/some luck away from making the playoffs in both of those years as well.

I agree.

Blaming Emery is dumb and makes very little sense. Emery has definitely done much more good than bad. And he's actually shown that he is capable of drafting talent.
