Headed down to Bourbonnais this place could use some content. So here are my notes. Have to say it was impressive to see how many people were there. And it was cool to see the new Bears on the field, and see what kind of talent is out there. Worth a trip, if you're thinking about going.
So these are the notes I took at practice. Went by position, obviously didn't every player, but I notice these ones. Take it for what you will.
Disclaimer: This was the first padded practice in late July. This team has a ways to go, so take all of this, with that in mind.
Notes from Practice:
Quater Backs:
Jay Cutler: Typically Cuddy. Made some great throws, forced a few balls.
Carson Palmer vs. Jimmy Clausen: Got equal reps with the second team through out the day. Seems like a wide open competition at this point. To be frank, neither really stood out. They both had their moments, and their bad reeds. If I had to say, I'd give a slight edge to Clausen at the moment. Just because it looks like he's got the better arm.
David Fales: Didn't get many reps. Made some nice short range accurate throws, and had a good ball in the redzone drill.
Running Backs:
Matt Forte: He was his usual jacked self. That guy is always in great shape.
Ka'Deem Carey: Running with the two's for the most part. Showed good vision.
Shaun Draughn: Maybe a dark horse to make the team. Good all around back. Big, good speed, and has good hands.
Jordan Lynch: Was kind of up and down. But looks better at RB than I thought he would. I doubt he makes the team.
Micheal Ford: Ran a lot with the twos, also did some put returning.
Tight Ends:
Black Unicorn: May have been dogging it a bit today, had a few drops. Made a few good catches across the middle.
Zach Miller & Matt Mulligan: Put these two together because the stood out from the other TE today. And they both played with the 1st, and second teams. We'd be in trouble if Marty goes down. But Miller made some plays, not that big, but pretty quick route runner. Mulligan got some time in the package last year where the Bears brought in Eben Britton in that heavy type formation. Pretty prototypical blocking tight end.
Wide Receiver:
Brandon Marshall & Alshon Jeffery: The two most impressive players on the field today. Marshall had some one handed grabs, and Jeffery took Fuller to task a few times. Both look to have big numbers this year.
Marquess Wilson: Made some great catches today. Hauled in probably the most deep balls out of anyone today. Struggled a bit against Hayden when he played press. But looks to part of a new big weapon in this offense.
Josh Morgan: Stood out today as probably the next best receiver. Not only as a receiver but as a return man as well. Would've had a TD on one he had.
Chris Williams: Was Jordan Palmer's favorite target in the second team. They hooked quite a bit today. Had a fumble on a return, but showed some real speed. Seemed to be his return job to lose.
Offensive Line:
Group that was farthest away from didn't get a great look at them. But they look okay in 11-11 you could tell it was the first day back in pads. So don't really want to make an judgement on these guys yet.
Eben Britton: I have confidence in him as a backup G/T. He could start for some teams. Look good out there. Pancaked Lamar Houston twice today.
Jordan Mills: Got beaten by Willie Young, and Trevor Scott today. But I thought looked better overall.
Defensive Line:
The whole defensive line was pretty dominate through out practice. A couple of guys seemed to stand out in pads today.
Jared Allen: The most impressive player on defense. Beat Bushrod like a drum, set him up perfectly a few times. Had at least two sacks. Then one play they try and double him with Marty on the edge and he just pancakes Marty to the ground a gets through. Looks good.
Lamar Houston: They ran a third down package today that had Young out wide and Houston at the three technique. He looked to be better when he was working from the edge than inside. Brought some energy to practice.
Willie Young: He was impressive, moved the pocket quite a bit today.
Trevor Scott: Probably my favorite player to watch today. I think this guy could rotate in this year. Showed burst, built like a tank. And on a line that doesn't have a ton of size. He's a good big body to have.
Will Sutton & Ego Ferguson: Sutton showed great hands and moves today. Was good at getting penetration with the second group. Ferguson is a lot shorter than I thought. Seemed to be kind of raw in some areas.
Linebackers:
Shea McClellin: Was inconsistent in coverage today. Didn't look like coverage came naturally to him. Had one pick go right past him. He looks like a 3-4 outside linebacker to me. Although he did seem to do pretty well playing mike with the twos.
Jon Bostic: I don't see how they can not start him. Easily the fastest linebacker we have. He started in the nickel, which we played at least 50% in 11-11 today. Also some strong in the second group.
Christian Jones: Took some snaps with the second team today, and was heavily involved in special teams. Looks like he's got a real shot to make that team.
Corner backs:
Jennings was dressed but didn't practice.
Charles Tilliman: Was matched up with Marshall all day, and made some good plays. Looks to be healthy, which I think is the most important think with him. Also worked a lot with Joe Kim, the marshal arts consultant, on hand work
Kyle Fuller: Was matched up on Jeffery all day. While Jeffery did have the better day, Fuller had some really nice plays. Couple times he stayed right with Jeffery and made a play on the ball. Thought he had a nice practice.
Kelvin Hayden: With Jennings out he played with the first team most of the day. Wilson got the better of him most of the day.
Sherrick McManis: I thought he was the third best corner on the field today. Made some really nice plays on the ball, and didn't let up many catches.
Safeties:
The group in general didn't really stand out that much.
Brock Verren: Didn't really make any plays, or many mistakes.
Ryan Mundy: Had a very good day covering Marty when he was on him. Better cover guy than I thought.
Danny McCray: Played pretty well with the second team, and was involved heavily on special teams. I think he's got a pretty good shot to make the team:
Adrian Wilson: Looks like a linebacker honestly. Didn't really make many plays. But he took all his reps with the second team today.
Special Teams:
Pat O'Donnell was the crowd favorite today. Tress Way actually had some pretty good puts. But O'Donnell had some bombs. People were cheering his punts, it was impressive.
Random Notes:
Trestman and Wilson ran wind sprints with the Quarterbacks, after practice.
Trestman literally runs most of the practice. All in a long sleeve shirt, and pants. He must have been dying.
Watching Chris Harris coach, is quite entertaining.
Last player to leave the field? Taylor Boggs. Working on his technique.
The players have pretty good taste in music .
Anyway those are my thoughts. I'd recommend anyone taking the trip down.

I wish I could have "and 2'd" this post. Thanks for the great update!

Went to camp yesterday (Monday)
The thing that stood out most was how fast the coaches run through drills.
Player-wise:
Offense:
Standouts to me on offense were Chris Williams and Marquis Wilson. Also Forte looks ready to rock & roll.
Williams and Wilson consistently got open and Williams was getting open quickly and consistently putting 2-3 yards of separation between himself and whoever was covering him.
Defense:
Houston looks like a beast ready for a breakout year. The guy looks like a 240 LB in his physique but weighs in at 300lbs. Monster. Plus he seems to practice angry.
I was disappointed in what I saw from Shea or what I didn't see. He didn't come close to making a play during any point in practice and seemed not even to be there. Just like he was on the D-Line. I'm really pulling for him but I'm getting worried.
I would be worried about Shea more if we didn't have Bostic. That guy looks great. He was everywhere and was consistently in position to knock a RB or WR's head off if they had been on game day mode. Don't be surprised if he starts at SAM and stays in during nickle situations in place of DJ Williams. The way he looked to me, he might be our best LB.
The defensive line looks like it will bring serious heat. There were several times they were on the QB almost instantly. The offensive line can only improve going against these guys. Mills had his hands full with Houston all day. In general, we seem to have a lot of guys on the line who can get after it. I expect tremendous improvement form this group over last year - thank God.
As far as DBs, only Fuller stood out. I wouldn't be surprised if he's starting by mid-season over either Jennings or Tillman. He consistently blanketed whoever he was on, including Marshall. Marshall did beat him once for a 30 yd TD strike from Cutler, but thats what Marshall does. Other than that, I think we might have us a lock down corner.
Tillman looks like his old self and was complaining to the crowd that they better make more noise when the defense makes plays than they do when the offense does. lol. He was having a good time and was moving quickly.
Safety-wise, Brock Vareen looked good, not special and the rest of the lot look like backups.
