Bears Q & A

John Fox
On his overview of the team he has arriving to camp
I know our coaching staff is really excited. I think this is the deepest, most competitive team we’ve fielded so far. I think there are going to be some hard (roster) decisions. … We’re excited to get start.
On what he views as his strengths as he tries to put a charge into a young team
You can only speak to what you’ve done in the past. I know here recently the last few years have not been very productive. I can see that. I think most people, in general, can. But I think our roster’s at the point now where I think it is competitive. ... One of the things I was probably impressed with was how our guys hung together when dealt a tough set of cards a year ago. It was impressive. Some of those guys are going be able to make our football team this year. And hopefully we’ve even improved with more depth than that.
On whether he feels increased pressure as he enters Year 3 as Bears coach with only nine wins in the previous two seasons
It’s really like Year 28 for me. I’m beyond the feeling-the-pressure part of it. As a coach, you put pressure on yourself. I think there’s a lot of people in that building, in those stands on Sundays, who want to see a winner bad. Every year, whether it’s this year or the last two years, that’s been the main focus and main objective for myself.
Mike Glennon
On how his approach has changed as he reports to training camp as the announced starting quarterback for the first time in his career
When I signed here, I already had my mind set on that. So it is a different approach when you go into the season as the starter rather than as the backup. When you’re the backup, you want to prepare like you’re the starter. It’s just not the same. You can try to trick your mind into that as much as you want. But when you are the starter, it’s different. I don’t know that I’ve prepared that much differently. I just think it’s a different mental approach to know what’s coming.
On the importance of having a bond and a trust with his other offensive teammates
That’s a big part of what being a quarterback is. It’s making those other 10 guys in the huddle better. I think we really have a good group of guys, starting with those guys up front. They’re kind of the backbone of our offense and a big part of Jordan (Howard’s) success last year. We’re lucky enough to have a guy as talented as him. But without that offensive line, I don’t think he would have had those kinds of yards. That’s kind of the foundation of where we are. I think I’ve gotten to know those guys, built relationships with them. I want to play for them. I don’t want to let them down, and I don’t think they want to let me down, either. I think there’s just kind of an unwritten (rule). What you do for your teammates is you don’t want to let them down, and you want to have their back.
Jerrell Freeman
On the culture and vibe he feels as training camp gets underway
Everyone is buying-in. We’re wanting a culture of buying in, trusting, understanding, being competitive. Guys understand that three wins is not acceptable. It’s not acceptable to us, to the fans. Fans definitely deserve better than that. I think everybody’s on the same page as far as culture and wanting to bring winning back to Chicago.
Akiem Hicks
On his openness to escalating talks for a contract extension
I love the city, man. It’s funny because, I was coming to Chicago long before I played for the Bears. My mother’s from here. ... I’m a momma’s boy, obviously. And when my mom found out Chicago was a team that was interested in me (during free agency in 2016), she was ecstatic. She was excited. She wanted me to be here. She wanted to be able to come here and see her son play in her home city. In living here, I’ve grown to love it. Go Cubs! I’ve just enjoyed my time here and I’m completely open to ending my career here.

QB report from the Digital edition of the Tribune this morning

Injury report
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/ct-bears-camp-rundown-spt-0728-20170727-story.html
Quarterback report
Mike Glennon: He made a strong, accurate throw on the run to connect with Markus Wheaton near the sideline during team drills. Glennon has functional mobility for being 6-foot-6, and when he was playing for the Buccaneers it was not uncommon for him to complete passes on the move. His length is more of a challenge, though, in resetting his throwing motion. If he's loaded up to throw one direction and has to recollect himself and throw elsewhere, it can be difficult corralling his long limbs. That was a focus for him during Bears practices in the spring and will continue in training camp.
Mitch Trubisky: Rookie pleased the crowd during seven-on-seven drills when he completed a long ball down the right sideline to undrafted rookie Tanner Gentry, who had a step on veteran reserve cornerback Sherrick McManis. Trubisky put just the right amount of air under the ball and Gentry ran under it about 40 yards downfield. It prompted the loudest cheer of the session. Later, Trubisky tried to squeeze a throw over the middle to tight end Daniel Brown through the tightest of windows. Undrafted rookie linebacker Alex Scearce was on Brown's inside hip, though, and tipped the ball away.
Injury report
•DL Eddie Goldman (dehydration) did not practice.
•S Deon Bush (dehydration) did not practice.
•LG Kyle Long (right ankle) was limited.
•ILB Danny Trevathan (right knee) was limited.
•CB Marcus Cooper (hamstring) was limited.
•OLB Lamarr Houston (left knee) was limited.
•OLB Pernell McPhee (right knee) is on the physically unable to perform list

The offense dropped too many passes on Day 1. Kevin White had two drops, while rookie running back Tarik Cohen and wide receiver Markus Wheaton each dropped one too.

Notes from Sunday Morning Trib

Quarterback report
Mark Sanchez: The Bears’ No. 2 quarterback has been steady through the first three days of camp. Sanchez was part of one of the big offensive highlights Saturday, connecting with Deonte Thompson on a deep ball up the left sideline. Thompson made a terrific left-handed catch, pinning the ball to his left shoulder pad. Coaches, receivers and fellow quarterbacks continue to laud Sanchez’s veteran presence. Said Cameron Meredith: “We all know who Mark Sanchez is. We have seen him play in AFC championship games. We have seen him do a lot in this league. He’s an established quarterback, and we’re excited to have him on this team. He has been a good leader for us. And when he’s in the huddle, he’s a real clear and concise guy.”
Mitch Trubisky: Fans were audibly discouraged when the rookie quarterback mishandled three snaps from center Taylor Boggs during the Bears’ first period of 11-on-11 work Saturday. It was a notable sequence as Trubisky continues to learn how to operate from under center after working out of the shotgun for almost the entirety of his college career. “It’s the most critical part of the play,” Trubisky said. “I have to take care of that.” As camp moves on, Trubisky will have to reduce the number of bumps in the road and prove he has a full grasp of the offense he’s learning.
Seen and heard
During a special teams period, Bears punt returners took turns trying to see how many consecutive punts they could catch without letting go of the previous ball they had caught. Rookie Tarik Cohen wowed fans by hauling in three balls in a row. But not long after, cornerback Bryce Callahan won the day’s competition by going for four, snatching the final ball with his right hand while he held the other three beneath his left arm.
Moving on up
The Bears announced a series of front office promotions Saturday. Most notably,
Champ Kelly was bumped up from director of pro scouting to assistant director of player personnel. The Dolphins,
one league source indicated, expressed interest in Kelly for a front office job. But the Bears had no intention of letting Kelly out of his current contract.
Participation report
OL Kyle Long (right ankle) did not practice.
RB Jeremy Langford
(right ankle) did not practice.
OLB Dan Skuta (hip) did not practice.
RG Josh Sitton (birth of child) remained absent.
ILB Danny Trevathan
(right knee) was limited.
CB Marcus Cooper (hamstring) was limited.
TE Zach Miller (right foot) was limited.
OLB Pernell McPhee
(right knee) is on the PUP list.
WHAT WE LEARNED
Trubisky has trouble with snaps
BOURBONNAIS — An energized crowd settled in Saturday at Olivet Nazarene for the Bears’ first padded practice of training camp. For most fans in attendance, it was an opportunity to get their first glimpse at No. 2 overall draft pick Mitch Trubisky. After practice, the quarterback also spoke with reporters for the first time since arriving at camp.
Here’s what we learned about the rookie and his beaten-up offensive line.
Trubisky had major struggles handling the snap from under center.
In the offense’s first 11-on-11 work, the rookie quarterback mishandled his first two snaps from center Taylor Boggs, putting both balls on the grass and sending groans through the bleachers. A smattering of sarcastic applause followed when Trubisky secured the third snap and successfully handed off to Ka’Deem Carey. But two snaps later, Trubisky again fumbled the exchange, offering a snapshot into some of the basics he still is trying to master as he begins his NFL career.“I just lost focus there for a period of time,” Trubisky said. “And then I was starting to overthink it and couldn’t get it.” Trubisky owned his fumbling mistakes and dismissed the explanation that his lack of experience under center caused Saturday’s hiccups. “It was frustrating because that was uncharacteristic of me,” he said. “I have to handle that. They were just wasted plays. … I wasted a team session right there, and I didn’t allow myself or my teammates to get better. You just have to block that out and bounce back.”
As the No. 3 quarterback, Trubisky is working to accept his current role.
The Bears have made it clear Mike Glennon is their undisputed starter at quarterback, with veteran Mark Sanchez preparing as the backup. At the moment, Trubisky is not competing for the starting role. The Bears also are hoping the rookie’s 2017 development will come behind the scenes rather than in regular-season games.
Trubisky is working to settle in under the team’s envisioned timeline.
“I have to respect the plan that they have in place,” he said. “And I have to believe in that.”
Trubisky understands he has a lot to sharpen, and he’s progressing through introductory courses with all those responsibilities.
“Redshirt year or not, you have to keep getting better,” Trubisky said. “When you’re called upon, you have to be ready to rock and roll. … As a competitor, you want to play in any situation, but you have to be aware of your situation and make the best out of it. You have to believe in the people that have the plan in place.”
The Bears face an uncertain road ahead with the interior of their offensive line.
For those who believe the Bears will be a vaunted unit up front with guards Kyle Long and Josh Sitton sandwiching promising center Cody Whitehair, the curveballs keep coming. Sitton still hasn’t reported. Coach John Fox indicated that Sitton’s absence was due to the birth of a child. Fox originally said he expected Sitton to be at practice by Saturday but now indicates the 10th-year veteran won’t be in the mix until “early next week.”
Long, meanwhile, did not participate in Saturday’s practice after experiencing what Fox said was soreness in his right foot. Long had surgery to repair a broken right ankle in November and seems unlikely to be practicing fully with the Bears at any point during camp.
“He hasn’t been in cleats since last season,” Fox said. “We won’t put a lot of pressure on that foot until we have to. Again, the target day is Sept. 10.”
That’s the date of the season opener against the Falcons. But until further notice, Long’s availability for Week 1 shouldn’t be assumed.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/ct-bears-practice-observations-20170730-story.html
BOURBONNAIS — The Bears are fully immersed in the training camp grind but will hold a lighter practice Monday morning before taking their first day off Tuesday. Coach John Fox has been pleased with his team’s effort and focus to this point.
Here’s what else we learned Sunday.
Markus Wheaton had an appendectomy and is out indefinitely.
The young receiver began experiencing abdominal pain early Sunday and was taken to the hospital to have his appendix removed. The procedure, Fox indicated, went well.
“They caught it and it didn’t rupture, which is a good thing,” Fox said. “So he’ll start that recovery process.”
It’s another health speed bump for Wheaton, who missed 13 games with a shoulder problem last season with the Steelers.
It seems unlikely he will be back practicing before the Bears break camp Aug. 14. Appendectomy recoveries typically require at least two weeks. Wheaton will also need time to get physically prepared to resume heavy lifting and contact.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/ct-bears-practice-observations-20170730-story.html
Here are five observations from practice. Keep in mind these are simply a snapshot of players’ work to get better.
1. Again, there was a fumbled center-quarterback exchange with Mitch Trubisky under center.
This issue has life after Trubisky was part of three fumbled exchanges Saturday. He did not speak to reporters Sunday, but Saturday he said the fumbles resulted from a lapse of focus. The Bears will tolerate mistakes in practice—by any player, not just the second-overall pick—as long as they’re corrected and result in improvement. Repeated mistakes, though? That’s more difficult to accept. First-stringer Cody Whitehair was the center on Sunday’s botched exchange. Veteran Taylor Boggs was the center Saturday.
Trubisky was intercepted by fourth-round rookie Eddie Jackson in 11-on-11 team drills. Trubisky locked on to receiver Rueben Randle on an intermediate out-breaking route, and Jackson broke on it in time to pick it off. (More on Jackson’s play below.)
2. Mike Glennon was smooth behind a clean pocket.
That’s the book on Glennon coming from the Buccaneers, and it’s showing here at Olivet Nazarene University. On a play-action pass during team drills, he connected with Cameron Meredith over the middle with room to run after the catch. Glennon’s feet were smooth and his upper body followed. His rhythm was clean, and it resulted in a chunk play.
Glennon also hit Ka’Deem Carey in stride on a checkdown to the left flat, a pass worth mentioning after he missed a similar one to the left on Saturday.
3. Running back Tarik Cohen is allergic to defenders.
Coach John Fox coined a new word Sunday in discussing the fourth-round rookie out of North Carolina A&T: evadability. Through two practices, it’s clear why “The Human Joystick” is one of his nicknames. He can stop on a dime, and he can do it two or three times in one play. It’s the product of great vision and the type of quick-twitch movement ability general manager Ryan Pace loves.
Cohen’s speed also stands out big time, which is expected in drills that don’t involve live tackling. He could be a very dangerous weapon the Bears’ screen game this year. The challenge for coaches is to develop enough versatility in Cohen so that teams can’t be sure a screen is coming when Cohen is in the game. That means making sure he’s a capable pass blocker and runner between the tackles.
4. Jackson’s interception was an example of the instincts that attracted the Bears to him coming out of college.
He began the sequence by identifying Randle as his responsibility in his half of the field. Then he saw Trubisky open up to throw.
"He was staring him down," Jackson said of Trubisky. "I just broke and made the play.”
Jackson trusted his instincts, got over top of Randle and made the interception. He didn’t undercut the route, and it’s possible that Randle either could have gotten a hand on it or Trubisky could have put it closer to the target. But Jackson was aggressive at the catch point and made the interception. That’s exactly what the Bears want to see.
5. Nose tackle Eddie Goldman’s bull rush is as good as ever.
Goldman drove Whitehair back in one-on-one pass protection drills, even getting Whitehair sliding backwards before falling. Goldman won with great leverage and strength. That’s a good sign for him a season removed from a high left ankle sprain that cost him 10 games.
Defensive line coach Jay Rodgers said Goldman’s experience through two seasons—even though he was hurt last year—is evident now.
“Eddie is to the point where he can watch film and identify what he did wrong,” Rodgers said. “We always talk about feet. We always talk about hands. We always talk about leveraging people. We always talk about how our get-off has got to be in our pass rush. How our hips need to flip. How our feet need to replace. How we finish.
“He can watch the film and say, ‘Alright, I got beat because I didn’t do this.’ That’s rewarding for me because I don’t have to spend five hours on the little things. He understands the little things. Now he can relate those things to the guy he’s matched up on and say, ‘This is what I need to do against this guy.’ And he can practice it all week and prepare on Sundays.”

Hearing that guys are coming into camp out of shape is infuriating.
Really hoping that eddie Jackson can stay healthy (sigh) because he could be a steal.
Wish we could hear more about Sheehan.

Re: Bears Training Camp July 27 -Aug 13th
So from everything I've read it seems that Trubisky has shown to be the most talented and skilled QB.
And Sheehan and Cohen have looked really good and every bit as athletic as advertised.
Obviously, we still have a long ways to go, but still nice to hear.

Re: Bears Training Camp July 27 -Aug 13th
From the original 90, I have B Bigg's expected 53 man roster http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/ct-projecting-bears-roster-10-thoughts-biggs-20170901-story.html Those in 'red' didn't make his projected 53. Note that he does suggest there's several spots with wiggle room; e.g. D Brown, J Morgan, S Acho

I think it would be a mistake to cut Gentry. Hopefully they keep him.

At the time I posted the 90 man roster, I'm positive Aguayo was still with TB. He hadn't been cut. I forgot to add him to the roster cuts addition since Biggs didn't make much mention of him.
