He's gathering the info on who's going to be available. Little different than saying he's going to be leading the charge.

Listening to Hub on the Score right now and he's about to have Greg Gabriel on there in a minute.
Hub's denying Ted has any say in the football operations.

I hope Hub's reporting is accurate

Outside Trubisky, this coaching hire will Pace's most pivotal decision.
Hopefully for everyone's sake, he gets it right.
I originally wanted him to get an offensive coach, but at this point I think he has to hire the best candidate period.
You can always go get a guy like Norv Turner to call the offense if you hire a defensive coach.

Can we just rename this to the coaching search thread?
It's obvious it's happening and might as well discuss it!
I was reading up a bit on Pete Carmichael Jr and after thinking about it, I'd be shocked if it wasn't him taking over. He's worked with Pace for so long, he's shown to be an elite offensive coordinator who's helped develop Drew Brees from his SD days onto his days with the Saints.
I think Pace/Fox have worked decently well together but I think having somebody so comfortable with Pace would be beneficial.
The biggest thing though is hiring both ST & DC. If Carmichael can take a page out of McVay's book and let an experienced DC take full control over the defense it would be ideal. I don't want to see us hire another Mel Tucker.

Yeah i was thinking the same. Esp since Pace may want to clean house in order to avoid being tied to anybody.

I heard this on the radio initially and was livid. Sounds like he is just making the calls, as he should, to ask for permission to interview coaches that are currently employed by other organizations.
I would have to think, even if Phillips did try to meddle, that Pace would tell him to go F himself. He has to know that this is going to be his last hire and he had better get it right if he wants to continue to have a GM job in the NFL.

The initial report by THE SCORE on Phillips was nonsense. It happened on the weekend when some lesser minds were handling the updates. The report was based on an Ian Rapoport report where he noted that the Bears were one of several teams preparing their head coach search and Rapoport unfortunately mentioned only Phillips by name. THE SCORE claimed that Rapoport reported that Phillips was leading the search independent of Pace. I watched Rapoport's report and he clearly did not intend that to be the takeaway. As has been stated here, Phillips was simply doing some early legwork in line with accepted NFL protocols.
EVERYTHING from what I consider credible sources indicates that this is Pace's call.
As Susan pointed out, the Saints' OC Pete Carmichael is an obvious candidate given his history with Pace. Two things though. First, while Pace has stated that he thinks the world of Saints' head coach Sean Payton, I can't recall any mention of his relationship with Carmichael. Second, since Payton is an outstanding offensive mind, it's unclear to me how the Saints' offensive gameplanning and signalcalling is divided between Carmichael and Payton. So my question is how much credit for the Saints' undeniable offensive success is attributable to Carmichael?
