Coaching search

Post#1 » by transplant » Fri Dec 29, 2017 10:53 pm

Susan suggested that the "Ted Phillips" thread be re-titled the new coach thread. I waited a bit and since it didn't happen, I'll start this one.

While it's clear that Fox is gone, I believe that the Bears can do worse than Fox. This scares me a bit since I don't see any candidate that wows me. This is further aggravated by the fact that there are probably 10+ NFL teams looking for a new head coach and they're all looking for the same thing...a young offensive minded OC who has the potential to be a NFL head coach. There may be 2 or 3 guys who are ready and available. It's an incredible sellers market and I don't know how the Bears can hope to compete.

I dont know if its obvious Fox is gone as they could've fired him 3-4 weeks ago and promoted Fangio or Loggains as interim as a tryout period which lets everyone know the job is open and to start positioning for the top assistants .

This is the Bears we are talking about so its always the hard way and there are still so many variables. Loggains was not a Fox guy and had been on the Bears raider for years as they tried to get him from the Titans in 2012 under Emery but the Titans refused to allow the Bears to interview him .

Its going to be interesting to see the end of the season press conference because changes will be made but there is still some uncertainty on which ones .

Give me Pete Carmichael.

Seeing the Saints have an elite offense for over a decade now with all different types of forms makes me comfortable in this dude. Having an excellent working relationship with the FO is the cherry on the top for me.

I think Cohen is underutilized currently and the Saints have been able to develop WRs, RBs, TEs and QBs to the highest level in the game. Heck, even their O-Line has been good for a minute here.

Get Pete, keep Fangio and all the defensive coaches and find a good ST coordinator and we're golden.

Could be Jon Gruden .....

https://sportsmockery.com/2017/12/rumor-bears-coaching-search-digging-deep-past/

“Bears meeting with Jon Gruden. They’ve been meeting since noon. Three plus hours.”
This information by itself is a little inconclusive. However, there is a fascinating element that threw gasoline on the fire. Mere minutes after receiving this information, news leaked out that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were keeping head coach Dirk Koetter for the 2018 season. This after rampant belief the team was on the cusp of bringing Gruden back. So something changed.

CBS Sports says it's McDaniels, Chiefs' Matt Nagy and Eagles John DeFilippo.

Probably all of them then. Those are all good choices.

Bears also seeking permission to interview Panthers D coordinator. He was the Bears secondary coach for a few years under Lovie Smith.

If the Bears, as most seem to expect, go with an offensive guy, I sure would like one who was THE top offensive mind and offensive play caller for his current team. From what I know or have read, neither Reich (OC) nor Di Filippo (QB Coach) calls the plays for the Eagles (HC Doug Pederson does). Nagy wasn't calling plays for the Chiefs until early December when HC Andy Reid relinquished these duties to Nagy. In the 5 games since then, the Chiefs offense has played well, but that's not exactly an established track record. Carmichael Jr. called offensive plays for the Saints in the 2012 season when HC Sean Payton was suspended, but otherwise Payton has handled these duties (on the plus side, the Saints had the 3rd ranked offense in 2012).

McDaniels is generally acknowledged as a great offensive mind. Belichick's background is on the defensive side of the ball. McDaniels runs the Patriots offense (with the help of arguably the greatest QB ever). If McDaniels had never been the Broncos HC for 1+ seasons (he was fired after the 12th game of his second season in Denver), he'd be the absolute ideal no-brainer HC candidate available. Unfortunately, it's hard to ignore the fact that when he took the Denver job in 2009, the then 33 year old McDaniels was a total asshat who somehow managed to alienate nearly every football executive, player and fan in the Mountain time zone. Still, that was 9 years ago and presumably McDaniels has matured at least a little.

Gimme McDaniels.

DeFilippo seems like a good qb coach but its hard to forget his time as the Browns OC
