The Chicago Bears have named Matt Nagy as the 16th head coach in franchise history. The former offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs will be introduced to the public at a press conference on Tuesday.

General manager Ryan Pace interviewed Nagy on Sunday morning in Kansas City, following the completion of the Chiefs season.

Nagy, 39, spent five seasons with the Chiefs and head coach Andy Reid, first working as the team's quarterbacks coach from 2013-2015, and the past two years as the offensive coordinator. In 2016, he served as co-offensive coordinator with Brad Childress; in 2017 he was the sole coach in that role. Under Nagy's guidance, Kanas City quarterback Alex Smith has posted the best numbers of his career. Smith led the NFL in quarterback rating this year with a mark of 104.7, and has completed more than 65 percent of his passes in each of the past four seasons.

Nagy began calling plays for the Chiefs offense during the 2017 season, and Kansas City had the fewest turnovers in the NFL while averaging more than 6.0 yards per play this past year. Rookie running back Kareem Hunt led the NFL in rushing during the regular season with 1,327 yards on the ground, while Smith threw a career-high 26 touchdowns. The 25.9 points per game the Chiefs averaged this season under Nagy's coordination ranked sixth in the league.

The Chiefs made the postseason four times in Nagy's five years with the club.

Before arriving in Kansas City, Nagy worked with Reid for the Philadelphia Eagles for three seasons. In 2011 and 2012, he was the team's offensive quality control coach, where he worked with quarterbacks Michael Vick and Nick Foles. Prior to that he was a coaches assistant for Philadelphia in 2010. In 2008 and 2009, Nagy got an introduction to the job by serving as a coaching intern at Eagles training camp.

Nagy will be the sixth current NFL head coach to have previously been an assistant under Reid, joining Baltimore's John Harbaugh, Carolina's Ron Rivera, the New York Jets' Todd Bowles, Philadelphia's Doug Pederson, and Buffalo's Sean McDermott.

Prior to coaching at the professional level, Nagy played quarterback in the Arena Football League. He was a member of the New York Dragons, Carolina Cobras, Georgia Force and Columbus Destroyers from 2002-2008. As an AFL quarterback, Nagy threw for more than 18,000 yards and threw 374 touchdowns. He earned second-team All-Arena in 2005 while playing for the Georgia Force. Nagy also served as an assistant coach at the high school level while playing in the AFL, working for three different schools during that time.

A 2001 graduate of the University of Delaware with a degree in health and physical education, Nagy played quarterback for the Blue Hens, where he set several school records, including career passing yards (8, 214) and touchdowns (58). As a senior, Nagy was named an All-American for his play.

I read Andy Ried says Nagy is the best HC prospect he's ever had.

I'm sure they will, but it may not be about the money if he just doesn't like it here. Hopefully that's not the case.

Like it! More I read about Nagy the more I like it.

I would think if money is comparable Fangio would stay with the group he's already been developing and knows his system....or I would hope.

If Fangio leaves, how about Jack Del Rio for DC?

If he can run 3-4 it'll be perfect replacement

I think that's what he ran in Oakland/LA.

That works if he is willing to come back to work. They fired him after only 1 years so he is getting paid to sit at home.

Why I am a fan of Matt Nagy

1. Andy Reid just produces NFL Head Coaches and has called Nagy the best coaching prospect he has ever had.

2. Andy Reid can help him build a staff. Reid helped Doug Pederson assemble a strong staff in Philly. Access to the Reid Rolodex is huge for building a staff.

3. The Chiefs offense is one of the most creative and unpredictable in the NFL and Nagy has a masters in it.

4. The Chiefs offense got better when he called plays this season. I believe they averaged 400 yards, and 28 points in those 4 or 5 games. They also do more with less on offense, obviously scheming around Smith's notorious arm strength issues, but they don't have a whole lot of talent at WR besides Hill. They do have Kelce who is far and away better than anyone we have. Still its not like they have the Eagles depth of pass catchers. IIRC he also made a strong commitment to the run with Hunt during those 4 or 5 games.

5. Has played QB, has coached QBs, and knows the position that we need to develop.

Either way I'm happy for a young hire and a risk even if it doesn't pan out. There really is never a perfect guy, you can find issues with anyone especially the other options this year.

That's a good point. I think they extended him last year to a 4 year contract so he would likely be taking a Pay cut to be a DC somewhere.

More then likely he'll sit out till he can maybe get a HC gig.

I've become more encouraged from different articles.

Chicago had limited weapons last season, but outside of Cohen for the first couple of weeks, there was limited creativity in getting players the ball. A lot of times, we seemed to concede that we have no weapons and just run it until defenses couldn't stop it. Nagy and Reid did a good job of finding different ways to keep defenses guessing while developing young players. They also reinvented a career game manager in Alex Smith.

I'm interested to see what Nagy can do with Trubisky, Howard, Cohen and Shaheen. Plus, the Bears will have the money to get WR's for him to work with as well.

Good longform article from the KC website:

http://www.chiefs.com/longreads/2017/mattnagy.html

One thing I like about Pace is his conviction on things. He went up and got Floyd (we'll see if he takes that next step). He went up and got Mitch (we'll see if he's capable of becoming a franchise QB). He took Cohen and Shaheen from unknown schools.

The biggest miss in the Emery era was not trading up in front of the Rams for Aaron Donald.

It still remains to be seen if Pace's ability matches his conviction/confidence but there's times to be aggressive and Pace isn't afraid of going for it.

I think this hire means we’re gonna go after a big play wide receiver like Landry or Ridley
