Now what do we do with Briggs

Since we weren't able/willing to deal Briggs during the draft, what should the Bears do with him. I would love to re-sign him, but with what both parties have said about eachother, I seriously doubt this is a possibility.

What do you think?

Yeah, I would also love for him to resign but I doubt it will happen. I have a hunch though that he might play after all for one more year under the franchise tag because the Bears will probably find a loophole to not pay and play him. We might as well let him go after this year since the draft is up.

I would bet he plays for the 7.2 million dollars this year...that is too much money to leave sitting on the able.

He'll play, but how many games? Cliff Levingston thinks he's only required to play 6 games to collect his paycheck; will he do that and hurt his chances at a contract from another team?

I think the Bears will hang on to him and pray that some other team's star LB gets injured in the off season or pre season so they become desperate for a trade. :P

You honestly think the Bears will play Lance Briggs the last 6 games if he sits out the 1st 10? There is little to no chance of that happening.

Yes, because management is stubborn and wants to make a point. They won't take the cap hit next year, but this year they'll wait it out.

Our day to trade him was Saturday. The market is nearly null now.

No, perhaps the right term would be "available to play."

My bet is still that he will play the full season...if he sits out the first 10 and then plays 6 he would get the year counted on his service time but he would not get his full years salary...only the prorated amount for 6 games...I just can't see him leaving 7.2 mil on the table...

I wish someone would disrespect me by paying me 7.2 million...

He gets paid by the game. Contract would be $7.2 million for 16 games.

He sits out 10 and plays 6, he gets paid 6-16's of 7.2 million. Loses about $4.5 million. would be pretty stupid.

But what he does do by that is he uses up one year of the Bears franchise tag rights. If he doesn't play at all I guess they can just keep not paying him, but sticking the franchise tag back on him the next year indefinitely.

If Briggs were to sit it, I would hope the Bears would do that. Giving up 7 million a season on the salary cap just to be dicks would be tough to swallow, but it would be funny

I still think ultimately they are going to get a deal done. If he sits out even one game, the Bears will bench him all season and tag him again. They aren't going to bend on this one.

Gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up for Cliff Levingston. Briggs is really painted into a corner in terms of getting his long-term contract, but it's hard to feel bad for a guy getting paid 7+ million to play football.

So are we just gonna end up keeping briggs and force him to sit out?

I think Briggs gets moved early in the season like WR D. Branch did last year for a bottom 1/3 #1 pick.

I don't see him playing another game for the Bears. (too much has been said with too many big egos).

I bet Angelo trades Briggs for some draft picks. Like a 2nd rounder and a Defensive Tackle.

Branch was passing up very little money by sitting out, Briggs would be passing up a ton of money and therefore, will almost certainly cave and play the season.

Trade Briggs for WASH 1st in '08.

That is a top 10 pick.

I don't know. I think Washington will have some success if they add Briggs. It may not be a top 10 pick.

it doesn't look like the bears will trade briggs this year unless some team steps up and offers a too good to be true deal or one of our young LB's play so good in the preseason we trade briggs for whatever we can get.

Right now, I say we take a 1st and a 5th for briggs and our 6th. Any team, I don't care.
