Cuban wants to create a rival football league

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is part of a group considering formation of a football league that would compete with the NFL for players drafted lower than the second round.

The league, still very much in the preliminary stage, would play its games on Friday nights. The NFL does not play then because of the potential conflict with high school football.

"It's a pretty simple concept," Cuban said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "We think there is more demand for pro football than supply."

The proposal was first disclosed by The New York Times on its Web site, which said it was the idea of Bill Hambrecht, a Wall Street investor who was a minority partner in the Oakland Invaders of the USFL, which played in the spring from 1983-85. Sharon Smith, a spokeswoman for Hambrecht and Company, had no comment and said Hambrecht was traveling and unavailable to talk about the idea.

There have been numerous leagues that have tried to compete with the NFL and a few that actually played games, starting with the AFL, which began in 1960 and fully merged with the NFL a decade later. It included such current franchises as New England, Oakland, Kansas City, San Diego, Buffalo, the New York Jets and Denver.

The UFL plans to exploit the 1961 Sports Broadcasting Act, which prohibits the NFL from televising games on most autumn Friday nights. The United Football League the U.F.L. plans to make a smaller deal with a cable network like USA, TNT or Comcast

Hmmm.. they just need to make sure they have some worthwhile QB's. ICLO the XFL could've carved out it's own niche had their QB's (and offense in general) not been so piss poor.

Bah, you got in the first XFL reference! :D

Anyway, the XFL failed on several fronts. I just don't think anyone wants to watch TV on Friday night, that is why it is a place for shows to go and die. You're just not going to create a new football league, it's not going to happen.

I kind of liked the XFL for the first few weeks but it got old after awhile. Mainly because the Enforcers sucked.
It was cool watching a different team play at Solider field though.

With the AFL's success Cuban is a moron. He's competing against two football markets, not just one. He'll have third-tier players with no one watching.

Haven't we learned from the XFL yet? So stupid.

Eh, if Cuban does this, I think he'll have to sell the Mavs because there's no way he can just run two franchises in league he's basically trying to outdo.

The best part of the XFL was when my friends and I got together for the first game, and it was freezing out and we were grilling. I don't think I watched another game after that.

Oh that and the one guy that got injured diving for the ball at the start of the game and then they had to change that rule. :D

I think that it all comes down to whether or not the UFL will have the money to pay bigger money to the later picks in the draft. Best case scenario: NFL minor league

People do have to remember that the XFL was all marketing and no substance. And the marketing wasn't even that good.
