Tank Johnson stopped by police in Arizona
Bears investigating Friday morning incident

By David Haugh
Tribune staff reporter

In what is becoming a ritual at Halas Hall, the Bears are gathering information about a police incident involving Tank Johnson that could affect the length of Johnson's eight-game NFL suspension -- if not affect his standing with the team.

Gilbert, Ariz., Police pulled Johnson over at 3:30 a.m. Friday and cited him for "being impaired to the slightest degree," according to Sgt. Andrew Duncan, a police spokesman. Police initially stopped Johnson for going 40 m.p.h. in a 25 m.p.h. zone when the officer on the scene "made observations that led him to believe Johnson was impaired," according to Duncan.

what an idiot. If blood tests come back clean, he'll be ok, everyone gets speeding tickets, and the nfl can't suspend guys for speeding tickets or half the players wouldn't play.

If he was found to be anywhere near the legal limit, he's toast, and it won't matter as the bears will just release him.

I reserve my judgement of Tank until we find out about him when his test come back.

Seriously though, 3 AM? I don't care if he was speeding but 3 AM? You think if hte guy was trying to clean up his act he would be staying at home around that time.

Heard this all over the radio my whole ride back from the Cell. Everyone is calling him an idiot and calling for Angelo to release him.

I can't worry about this buffoon anymore.

Looks like he probably got nabbed by some redneck cop for being a big black man driving in a one-horse Phoenix suburb after 3:00 am.

Way too suspicious. WTF is a cop doing running a speed trap at 3:30 in the morning?
And do you know how easy it is to go 40 in a 25 mph zone?
You can't even drive as slow as 25 mph for any distance without taking your foot completely off the accelerator and deliberately slowing down.
Especially at 3:00 in the morning with noone around.

And what is this trumped-up "impaired in the slightest degree" law? What kind of "2-gun Pete" cowboy cop is qualified to be making that kind of judgement call? The same one that can estimate the speed traveled by Jupiter's largest moon. Which is to say NONE.

I am white, but I would be interested in what color this cop is. And I am one of the world's greatest opponents to the freekin "race card" arguments in this day and age. But this is a pretty hokie lookin deal in Phoenix AZ, so maybe you never know.

But at this point. What's to worry about?
The Bears are too close to the top to waste much more time on a dude who is looking more and more like a continual loser.

I mean he's what, 23 years old.
Just got off work and on a vacation break for a while.
And back at home since who knows how long that's been.
To say nothing of finally having a bunch of previous past legal and personal problems behind him.

Why shouldn't he be able to be out and relaxing until 3:00 am?
And as for going 40 mph in a 25 zone at 3:00 am? Wow. Come on, what was it, a school zone? Where were the children? And what is a freekin cop doing guarding a school zone or whatever it was at 3:00 am?
Nothing else to do for the big lawman in Gilbert Arizona?
Except detect the slightest hint of impairment. Ridiculous.

But when it's all said and done, he's gonna have to pay.
The stakes were too high for him to even be leaving his house practically.
And the way it looks his luck has been running for quite a while now, he should have never taken the risk.
And the Bears will probably feel like they don't want to take any more risk on him.

Sounds like Tank is gonna lose.

But that David Haugh guy who writes for the S-T oughta STFU and undrstand he ain't the judge and jury regarding Tank Johnson or anyone else. He is a very repugnant dic who completely distorts facts and can't write anything without using a bunch inflamatory buzz words trying to make his dogsh_t articles controversial.

This doesn't make sense. They take blood from him and then immediately release him? When suspicious of drunk driving it's standard to give a field sobriety test. Walk a straight line, recite the alphabet, etc... Did they do that? If they did that and he passed there would no reason to draw blood. If he didn't pass he would have been given a breathylzer, blood would have been drawn and he would have been charged.

Who cares about the BAC.
The fact he was out at 3:30 AM really pisses me off.

I don't think it has anything to do with him smoking weed.

It's not a major crime or anything, but the guy just has to be smarter and keep his ass covered from now on. I hope we don't release him over this, and considering that the team stuck by him on the guns charge, I'd think they'd stick by him on something this minor.
