This historical lack of offense is our fault

Post#1 » by emperorjones » Tue Oct 16, 2007 8:51 pm

I'm thinking that Bear fans/Chicagoans attitudes about strong defenses have had an influence over the years on managment and where the focus has been. The Bears have seemingly been a run the ball stop the run team forever - despite changes in the league and the game. Our coaches are defensive coordinators. Our best players are always on defense - why?

I'm grasping at straws here, but please let me know why our offense always stinks?

Ever since I was a kid I remember the Bears playing in crazy weather conditions. These days when I see snow or rain on gameday I get all giddy. Doesn't happen as much as it use to. I can't believe I'm saying this, but...

Has Global Warming affected the style of play in the NFL?

I know, weird thought, but it makes sense. There were always 3-4 games (usually at home)that were heavily influenced by weather. 3-4 games in the NFL is a lot. Rain, snow, mud, wind, etc. When that happens, defense is key! In that type of weather its hard to pass the ball. This is why the Chicago Bears have always been a run stopping, ground pounding type of football team.

But its a myth - the Bears outside of 85' have played like crap in Bear weather. teams run all over us. Remember last year in Pittsburgh?

I'll tell ya why ^

Our running game isn't dominant. Remember who ran the ball in '85. Oh.. some guy named Payton. lol.

I think this team really needs a dominant back to be the real "Bears".

Plus, its just a theory I have. I know its strange, o'well.

I think your theory is correct in part - but I think the image of the 85 Bears just as the Butkis era before it is so powerful that people completely forget the eras of getting our butts smashed in cold weather in between.

I think it has been our inability to draft a star QB. Its hard to have a great passing game with the string of lousy QB's we put out year after year. Every once in a while we find one thats decent. Maybe its lousy drafting or luck of the draw. We have spent #1 picks on QB but we just pick the wrong ones. We won the super bowl with a great defense, and until we win it with great offense we will remember ourselves as a great defensive team. As far as I'm concerned if we win the big one I'm happy if it is based on offense or defense.
