QBs in the draft that can change this team

Post#1 » by chibearsfan » Wed Oct 17, 2007 4:23 pm

Are there any good QBs (no 5'11 gunslingers/scramblers) that could slide to us assuming our pick would be in the 15-20 range.

Cliff Levingston is high on Matt Ryan of BC. He's a pocket passer but seems to have good awareness/mobility (think Tom Brady type of elusiveness in the pocket), a good arm and calm under pressure. Not to mention, he's scraping 6'5".

Some mocks have him available around the middle of the first round.

if he wins the heisman think top 10 or 5 though.... I'm a big BC fan so I've followed matt ryan over the last couple of years... he def has the ability to lead his team from behind, has surprising elusiveness in the pocket, and has a strong, accurate arm... he's improved greatly over the last couple of years.
not to mention that i got drunk with him at a bc party when i visited my brother when i was a senior in HS

Part of the problem with any QB coming in is the system lacks imagination and WRs(in my opinion). I would say that of the top 3 projected QBs (Brohm, Woodson and Ryan) the best all around would be Brohm and Ryan may be the sleeper to be a super down the road. Brian Brohm reminds me of a young Jim Kelley.

the bears have a horrible record of drafting qb's, i doubt angelo would get the best one for the team.

It'll be some 5th rounder because...well that's just the Bears

We have obviously proven we can't select a quarterback that will pay dividends in the future. We seem to have luck at the defensive positions, most notably linebacker and any of the pass rushers; D-ends and D-tackles.

I would rather try to pick up a proven QB through FA or a trade(which is unlikely), rather than try to find one through the draft.

The amount of time it would take for that QB to make the impact we need would take as much time as we have in our superbowl window. I'm not willing to wait it out, and also shrink our window.

By picking up a QB through FA we keep our window open, and we don't waste time and our defensive guys don't age.

We probably won't find one better than Griese though given his familiarity with the offense and he's not that bad of QB. If we've got a chance to, might as well draft your future franchise QB and let Griese play another 1-2 years before you throw him into the fire.

Matt Ryan-Boston College I think he will go in the top 5 in this draft. This kid is a future star.

Colt Brennan-Hawaii Who knows how good this kid will be in the NFL. He is a QB on a team that passes heavy but he does have a good arm. Timmy Chang was an unbelievable QB in college for Hawaii but did not even play a game in the NFL.

Tim Tebow- Florida He is a sophomore right now so he probably won't take the leap yet but he might be a star in the NFL. Or he could be the next Chris Leak/Rex Grossman.

Graham Harrell-Texas Tech Junior QB who has already thrown for 3,151 yards and 31 TD's leading Texas Tech to a 6-1 record. 31 TD's in 7 games. That is Peyton Manning like numbers in a very tough Big 12.

Andre' Woodson- Kentucky Senior QB who has thrown for 1,786 yards and 21 TD's leading the Kentucky Wildcats to a 6-1 record. He threw for 250 yards and 3 TD's in Kentucky's upset over LSU Saturday.

Dennis Dixon- Oregon Senior QB. The main stat I look at with Dixon is he has thrown for 15 TD's in 6 games while only getting intercepted twice. Both were in the same game too.

Matt Grothe- South Florida. He is a sophomore so I doubt he comes to the NFL yet but he is a guy to look out for in the next two years. He isn't have a fantastic season but he has led South Florida up to #2 in the polls.

I like Woodson and Ryan as picks we might be able to attain if they make it a priority to take a QB in the first round as they should.

There's something about Colt Brennan though I just have a bad feeling about. He just seems like a guy that would get fans hyped up and then completely let down.

His name alone I swear, it fits right in somehow when I read a list of failed QB'S here, Cade McNown, Kordell Stewart, Rex Grossman, Colt Brennan. Angelo drafting him would pretty much seal the deal.

not a bad idea Cliff. I guess if the draft pick we use on a QB is in the later rounds I would be ok with that. Otherwise I think its just a waste of an asset.

Maybe if there was a QB that we didn't expect to drop down to an earlier round(kinda like Orton), I wouldn't mind taking him.

But your point about Griese I can agree with, hes not that bad. If there is a QB in free agency better than Griese than Angelo would be an idiot not to shell out the cash for him.

Let me see we passed on(from memory), Bulger, Warner, Garcia; all in one year. Oh and Testaverde too

QBs dont take years to develope like they did a decade or two ago. Take guys like Brohm and Woodson and Ryan they're playing for teams that are spreading people out and throwing the ball 25 times a game or more. All 3 are seniors also.

I agree with Cliff that depending on where we stand in the first round and what QB comes up there are a couple to look at and they are Ryan and Woodson.

I would take either one in the first round with the idea of him playing behind Griese and competing with Orton for a couple years as a possible franchise QB for the future. That said just to say that I think Orton still has every possiblity in the world of becoming a very good NFL QB. Perhaps sooner than expected if necessary, like an injury to Griese.

In the meantime I am happy enough with Griese and the Bears can go with him for a couple years or more if they get a few other things fixed.
Mainly the offensive co-ordinator and secondly the offensive line.
The damn injuries on defense are just part of the game and are on the verge of ruining this hopeful season for us, but there's only so much you can do about that.

Find the scouting report for Tom Brady and then find someone with a similar scouting report.

IMO physical ability and numbers should be tossed out the window when we go to evaluate qb's. We've seen too many examples of qb's who excel in college with gaudy numbers only to flop and fail quickly in the NFL. Our PRIMARY skill we need to focus on is a QB that doesn't get rattled. A guy that is smart and just has absolutely no fear in the pocket. That should be the first thing they look for. I think most everything else can be learned and developed.
