They really show that its not all Benson and how bad our OL really is.

Thank you CBS for posting something like this. I've been looking for O-line stats for awhile now.

Yes, Benson isn't that bad.

Can someone further explain someone of the numbers like ALV and how the rankings work? I'm kind of confused just looking at everything at as whole.

I'm not really sure how the exact formula works but ALY(not V, ) measures the production of the O-line, and most notably it does its best to separate the production of the running back.

Some elements it uses to measure are where the running back is tackled, who tackles the running back, matches up the # of O-line to D-line, etc, etc. As the running back goes past the line of scrimmage and further away from the o-line, the less it effects the stats. So, big runs like 30-40 yards, are credited more to the running back.



I don't exactly agree witht he whole thing, but its probably one of the only true ratings O-lines have. Ideally you want each part (LT, LG, C, RG, RT) of the O-line's ALY rating to be higher than the RB's average run per carry.

If you take each ALY rating for O-lineman on every team it is suppose to equal the average NFL RB's yards per carry.

So taking a look at the best blocking team (INDY) each of their ALY ratings for each lineman is higher than Addai's avg/carry (4.7) except the RT (4.03).

This means 4/5 of Indy's lineman should be given more credit than Joseph Addai.



Now look at the Bears #s. The right side of the line and mid(Olin K.) are doing a decent job, and the left side is suffering.

These stats are rarely mentioned in any broadcast or fantasy show because they're just intensely confusing. Its kinda like the PER or efficiency rating in b-ball. It does a fine job with the numbers, but isn't completely convincing.



Does that kinda clear it up NoSKy?

Just about every single position on the offensive line sans Center needs to be re-evaluated. Not that we're going to get upgrades but we should be looking for them.

Yeah kind of.

Don't try to understand how ALY works, its too confusing.

What I explained about the ALY and the RB's avg yards/carry is all you need to know.



I only played HS football and never had a chance to understand the O-line schematics and what not. Maybe one of you guys use to be on the line, D or O. I guess it doesn't matter, but I have a question.

How can we be so bad at run-blocking, but mediocre at pass-blocking?


...I know when you pass block you tend to move back and then get settled as your first step, and when run-blocking you push forward for your first step then you plant while you step forward. But I don't understand how we can be 28th in runB and 18th in passB????

I don't need stats to see the OL is terrible.

Tait is a RT at best.
Garza is the worst starting guard in football.
Ruben Brown needs to retire.
Fred Miller is absolutely spent & needs to retire.

So, basically we have a Center & everyone else is garbage/playing out of position.

The future of this OL does not look good at all.

it looks like rt-miller was #8 in something

i have been saying since the end of last season that miller is done

im in seattle, flew here for the game yesterday, and if you can believe it miller actually looks worse live


benson is solid, but not a premier back by any means----we need either 2, or one premier back
due to injuries and the fact that we wont land a top 10 back in the draft, the 1st option seems best
