W/ the 14th pick of the 08NFL draft the Chicago Bears select

SW started a thread awhile back, but I'm sure everybodys thoughts have changed on their picks and prospects, and we can't vote again. I'm sure we'll have a couple more of these as we get closer to the draft.

Who's your pick for the Bears 14th choice?
QB - probable: Matt Ryan(QBs always fall, Big Ben, Aaron Rodgers... Ryan could be this years 1st round falling QB), otherwise other QB prospects at this pick isn't worth it.
RB - probables: Mendenhall, Stewart. Both guys have almost identical bodies and pretty much the same combine stats.
OL - probables: Clady, Williams, Baker, Jeff Otah, Carl Nicks(he looked real impressive during combine)
WR - probables: DeSean Jackson, Malcolm Kelly(a lot of mocks had us with him, until he shot up the board), James Hardy(I love this guy. 6'7'' and 220. Not only is he big, but he can move with a 4.47 40 time.), Limus Sweed. (jump out of the gym type of guy. 6'5'' 215)

The logical choice would be OL, but Jerry hasn't really proved to be "logical" in most of his drafts. He'll probably take a linebacker in round 1 and draft a tackle in round 6.
But count Cliff Levingston in for an offensive lineman: Jeff Otah or Chris Williams.

I voted for OL. That is are biggest area of need at the moment and there are some good options availabe for us at #14. Without a solid OL it doesn't matter who is playing the other positions. I can, however, possibly see us choosing Mendenhall or Stewart but with the way our last first round RB has turned out thus far I'm not sure they want to take another one this soon in the first round (not sure how much money the 14th pick normally gets). If we do go RB we will have to get at least three more O-Lineman with the remaining picks.

I want Rashard Mendenhall but I think we are going to end up going offensive line in the first round and maybe QB in the 2nd round.

I see the Bears trading down and taking the best player available at the positions you listed (probably OT though).

Shoot, I should've added a 'trade-down' option.
O'well. I don't think they will trade although there are two very likely candidates.
Two teams, Miami and Atlanta, have two second round picks. Both first picks in the second round are higher than ours.
[the numbers in the parenthesis are their draft points value]
Miami has the first pick in round 2 - 32nd (590) overall and the 57th (330) pick.
The total points in draft value is 920.
Atlanta has the sixth pick in round 2 - 37th (530) overall and the 48th (420) pick.
The toal points in draft value is 950.
The 14th pick is worth 1100 points in draft value.
You would lose some points in any trade with those two teams, but you gain in contract flexibility. The first round pick is more money and is going to be more of a commitment in total years. Thats another thing, trading down does. Reduce years in a contract, which helps keep team payroll down. Thats a total Angelo move.
To better gauge the value of picks, last year we traded our 37th pick (530) for the NYJets 63rd pick (276). It took us Thomas Jones to do it.

I'm not saying it was a lot to move up that much, but considering what we had playing behind him(mostly an unknown Benson), it was a dumb move.
I could see a possibility of trading down.

Wouldn't mind going skill position at 14. Mendenhall or Sweed. Wouldn't mind going OT either...

Good call on Sweed. I totally forgot about him. I'll add him to the probable list.

BULL even PAX - not sure if you're meaning who we
want the Bears to pick or who we think the Bears will pick here.

Either, or. I meant
want more than I was asking
who do you think.

Didn't know where to put this and I didn't want to start another thread.

NFL.com wrote:NFL Network's Mike Mayock reports that Oregon RB Jonathan Stewart may need surgery on his big toe. The procedure would keep him out four to six months.
Stewart suffered a turf toe injury in November and didn't miss any games. He also ran the forty at the Combine, but performed no shuttle or cone drills. In the meantime, he had MRIs done and doctors recommended he undergo surgery. Individual teams will evaluate whether surgery is required. Expected to be a first-round pick, his stock will fall dramatically with any team who doesn't medically clear him.
More reasons to hope Mendenhall is there for our first, then the Bears better pray that one of the LT is available for the second round pick.
Otherwise we nab a LT in the first and pray Felix Jones or Chris Johnson can be significant factors in our offense for 08.
The chances of an O-line being there for our second round pick is much greater than the chances of Chris Johnson/Felix Jones becoming the Bears' impact back.

I voted "RB." I figure we could use a difference maker there, but alas, we need to get a OT/G instead. Otherwise, we could have A.P. version 2 for that matters, and he'd get hammered in the backfield every time without an O-Line. I like Cliff's suggestion though, if those two guys are there at 14, you got for them. There's a possibility Mendenhall could fall to the 2nd round, and maybe we can get Joe Flacco in the 3rd Round.

If we end up with
1st - RB (hopefully Mendenhall)
2nd - LT
3rd (two picks) - QB, WR
I'd be happy with that. With our QB having a legit threat at running back makes him that much better. Plus, we never really found out what Benson had with our terrible O-line, nto that I'm counting on anything big.

The best offensive lineman available!

My personal draft preference:
1) OT
2) OG
3) WR
3) RB
4) QB
5) S
6) DT
7) BPA - OL

I want them to pick Otah or Clady. But the Bears never do what we want them to. They'll pick a RB (probably a guy like Felix Jones) that'll end up being a bigger disappointment than Cedric Benson (if that's at all possible).
Angelo will make a boneheaded move and we'll all smash our televisions around Chicago in unison (not to mention shock/horror).

If they can trade 14 for a high 2nd rounder and late 2nd rounder, they'll have a heck of a draft.
Most likely they won't, so I'd go this way...
1. Kenny Phillips (He's falling but why not make our defense stronger, an offensive player won't do much immediately...sure we can get O-Line, but there are too many good O-lineman in this draft and not enough talented safeties) Phillips reminds me a lot of Ed Reed, both studs in college, however they fell in the draft to the late 1st round.
2. Best available OT (If Flacco is still here, take a shot and go with him)
3. Best available OG
3. I would go with a QB here, probably Woodson (We might be picking kinda high for him but since we've grabbed our O-Line, lets go for it)
4. RB (Steve Slaton sounds nice, I doubt he'll be here, but I would take him immediately...Very different to what we already have)
5-7. Anything goes here: LB, CB, WR
I wouldn't mind if we just skipped getting a QB at all...It would be better if we made a trade for a decent veteran somewhere in the league.

If we have an opportunity to draft Mendenhall, you have to take him. He has the makings of a very special player. He's a tough runner, has speed, possesses the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, and being a local kid, he's got Chicago bears written all over him. I really think he

I think we should draft chris Williams in the first round and either nick rachal the second round.

Alas, my first post in this thread is just a pipe dream. Flacco has moved up in the mock drafts, and Mendenhall looks like a 1st Rounder. Its going to be a tough decision by Lovie, Angelo et al to pick who they want. I mean, the only 1st Round Offensive Tackle I'd go with in this draft are Jake Long and Jeff Otah (a nearby local product from where I'm at, and I've heard nothing but good things about this guy). If those two guys are gone, then if Rashard Mendenhall is there, the BEARS should take him! And hope they can move up a little in the 2nd Round to ensure they get Flacco. They really need a 3rd String QB, one with some real promise, and I bet he can compete for a starting job. I'm basing this on the point made by chibearsfan, that this Draft has a lot of good O-Linemen.
