2005 NFL Draft: All Over Again

Post#1 » by shugknight » Tue Jun 10, 2008 2:39 am

Alright, you knew it would happen sooner or later. I thought, and hopefully you all thought the same thing that when we drafted Benson, he had immediate BUST written all over him. So looking at the 2004 roster, and going into 2005 with the draft coming up, who would you have drafted? Now remember, to make this fair, you have to look at the team roster and what needs we had. Nobody knew that Merriman would become the freak that he is or Spears becoming pretty dominant, so making that pick is the easy way out (unless of course you can justify yourself)

Here are some tools you need:

2004 Bears Roster

2005 Bears Roster

2005 Draft Prospects with Rankings

So with that in mind...

In the 2005 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears select...

You know what's funny? I loved Mike Williams when he was coming out. I thought if he played with us paired up with a healthy Rex, we could do some damage. Was Williams just a lazy idiot? or was it the Lions? I don't really remember.

Anyway, my pick would of gone to any of the 3 WR's (Williams, Troy Williamson, and Matt Jones) I really wanted Matt Jones as well cause of that fact that he could always go back to QB if Rex got hurt.. ironic huh?

Probably Cadillac(Even tho it looks like he has busted too now).

Carnell is only really out of it because of injury, but I was on the bandwagon to draft him moreso than Benson.

As to Mike Williams, yeah he had some problems(But honestly the Lions run such a terrible organization that it was probably a combination of a lot of things).

He was frequently late to practice, heard he didn't get along with the coaches, the coaches tried to move him to TE.

Lions had Roy Williams,and Charles Rodgers(Two 1st round WR's).

A combination of a lot of thing's.I think if he had been drafted somewhere else, his career would have turned out much differently.

We should have lost one more game so we could have drafted Braylon Edwards. I think the Bears really loved him and would have taken him first overall if they had the chance.

Also, how great would it have been to pick up Frank Gore in round 3 or Marion Barber in round 4?

Benson is almost in Ryan Leaf's category.

He's not anywhere near Ryan Leaf...people were torn between Leaf and Manning...people were torn between 3 average RB's in Benson, Brown, and Williams.

Benson is more of a Lawrence Phillips type bust if anything.

I remember wanting to trade down and take Derrick Johnson....sick LB corps of Briggs/Urlacher/Johnson.

I remember wanting Mike Williams on draft day too

My mock that year I had the Bears taking...Aaron Rodgers in the first and Fabian Washington in the 2nd. I would stand by the Rodgers pick even with Rex on the roster because of Rex's lack of durability, plus the fact Spurrier QBs never make good pros.

Just looking at that guy's rankings headed into that draft, yikes! Granted it's the weakest draft of the last decade, but he had some outrageous optimism on some guys.

I was high on Mike Williams as well. I wanted him so bad. My top three were Mike Williams, Cadillac Williams, and Derrick Johnson.

In hindsight, we should have draft Maurice Clarrett in the first. Same result, only we would have know sooner.

Rolle was my pick----saving plenty of $ on Manning, and Rolle would have been nice after the Vasher injury
