DUI gets Melo 2 games - Benson cut

Post#1 » by emperorjones » Tue Jun 24, 2008 12:58 am

Carmelo Anthony will be forced to sit out the first two games of the 2008-09 season for driving under the influence of alcohol, a source told the Denver Post.

I think its interesting that the Bears have now cut 2 players after DUI arrests (not convictions) while the NBA (or Nuggets I'm not sure) feel its only worth sitting 2 out of 82 games for a conviction. Who's closer to being on target?

But Benson wasn't convicted of anything. I think the NFL is going at this wrong and its going to bite them really bad one day. I just don't understand why they cannot wait until a guy has his day in court to hand out punishment - why the rush? If you want to cut a guy after he's convicted -fine. But after an arrest? I think thats really bad policy.

Thats my point. Benson DID what? He got arrested in two months. That is not a crime in itself. IF convicted on the charges so be it. But this concept of the cops said you did it so you must be guilty is crazy.

Hey, whether it was reasonable or not, it gave us an excuse to dump Benson without copping as much heat for wasting a draft pick as management would have otherwise recieved.

How are these suspensions not reasonable. He got arrested twice for driving different vehicles while drunk. While I will admit I was behind him in the boating incidence, the drunk driving screw up really hurt him. Now I am almost convinced that he was drunk on that boat, and that he figured since he was an athlete, he could get away with it. I am doing some serious charity for cancer right now, and if I got pulled over a blew .05 (legal limit .08) and anybody found out, I would be screwed. Driving under the influence is inexcusable, and is an embarrassment for anybody who has their name involved in such a case. I do agree that Melo should have gotten more, especially after his weed problem in the airport, but I disagree about the NFL going about this the wrong way. There should be a zero tolerance for drunk driving. These rich assssholes should be able to call a car service.

I agree with the things you said in bold. The difference is that I am willing to wait to see if he actually was guilty before issuing a punishment or assuming he was guilty.

The fact that Benson's under question for both accusations is why I have no problem with him being cut. And if every other line of work, a boss would never wait until a conviction was handed out before he fired someone. It's also going to take FOREVER for a trial to be set and had.

As for Melo, drunk driving is absolutely insane, stupid, reckless, and inconsiderate. If David Stern had a pair, Melo would be out half a season at least.

I would make the same argument for any other line of work. The core of my argument is that people in this country seem tremendously impatient to convict. Whats the rush?
