Orton Leading The Race In Chicago

The Chicago Sun Times wrote:Kyle Orton appears to be leading the race to be named the starting quarterback of the Bears as the 2008 season draws near, according to The Chicago Sun Times.

Orton looked a lot better than Rex Grossman in the team's preseason loss to the Seahawks on Saturday night in overtime.

"I never really got comfortable," Grossman said. "We just weren't playing real smart to start the game."

Grossman was 9-for-15 with 74 yards and an interception in the loss.

"Not really pleased with what many of our offensive guys did early," coach Lovie Smith said. "We didn't get a lot done. Rex was a part of that."

Orton, however, looked solid after going 5-for-9 and leading the Bears downfield for a key field goal.

I guess this explains why Orton played sparingly and Grossman was given an (undeserved) extended chance.

What Chitown says in the other thread is right, they force fed him playing time and it blew up in their face.

If this staff picks Rex over Kyle, Chicago is going to riot.

Just by watching practice after the first game, anyone would be quick to realize Orton is the leading candadite. The plays being called while Orton is under center are far more interesting and less Vanilla than what Rex is usually summoned up to call. I think Forte's quick recognition and Kyle's efficient and quick short passing game is perfect for our inept offensive line.

If I had hair to pull I would do it!

Orton isn't a starting QB. Grossman at least has the tools, but I have a better football IQ than he does. I'm sick of Chicago having a game manager at QB. The defense and special teams can't win every game. I want a difference maker at QB. I didn't see the game, but how did Hanie look? I only get to see the Bears when they are on national TV.

How about this team grow a pair and...oh I don't know...actually name someone?

Hopefully they will after the next preseason game. Orton's style made a lot more sense for this team as currently constructed before training camp even began, so Cliff Levingston saw it as a formality mostly. It'll be nice once it's settled, but we'll still have a ghastly offense.

2:58 p.m.: Kyle Orton will be named the starter for the regular season, the Bears announced. Lovie Smith will make the formal annoucement after practice.

Orton had a solid training camp and performed well in the team's first exhibition, while Rex Grossman struggled as the starter in Saturday's exhibition loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Orton finished last season starting the final three games, going 2-1 in those games. He started 15 games as a rookie, going 10-5.

You guys are quick - I just got the "breaking news" notice about Orton getting job via my fantasy site. Would be interested to see what he did that was better than Rex during this preseason because I certainly didn't see it in the games.
