Postgame thoughts: 49ers @ Bears

Post#1 » by Chewie » Fri Aug 22, 2008 2:48 pm

More completely random hits:

- First the good news. We just *may* have found our QB. While he's got a bad case of the happy feet, Orton looked poised and didn't turn the ball over while developing a rapport with R Davis. 10 for 17 for 142yrd and 2TDs. Neckbeard needs to send a fruit basket to Nate Clements.
- We're awfully good at blocking kicks and punts, aren't we?
- Dusty Dvoracek....come on down! You were missed. He was a stud during that goal-line stand in stuffing a run and coming up with a sack. STAY THE EFF HEALTHY NOW.
- Tillman has missed a ton of time in camp due to "personal reasons" and the lack of practice has seemed to carry over to the games. He needs to get his head turned around in coverage.
- Wolfe can just go away. Aside from his nifty little TD against 3rd stringers earlier this preseason, he's shown nothing. D Manning has shown to be the better backup kick returner (though both fumbled in this game) and Kevin Jones and even PJ friggin' Pope look more capable backing up Forte.
- Speaking of Kevin Jones, he looked slow to me to be sure but he's elusive and can break tackles.
- Lose the WR screen to Hester. Now. Teams get off the bus looking for that.
- And, Hester, no more over the shoulder catches of punts at the goal line. It's just not smart...even with your skill-set.
- I like that #39 Polite. He hurts people that try to tackle him and hurts people on special teams. I hope he makes the cut.
- Grossman. Good job killing the QB controversy.
- Y'know... in Bradley's rookie year what I liked about him is that he was the only WR we had that could do something meaningful after the catch. He had moves. He wasn't satisfied with just making the catch - he wanted more. The injuries must have caught up with him - I saw a couple of catches last night where he just couldn't do anything afterward. Stumbled on one and slipped on the other.
- JT O'Sullivan 7 for 8 for 126 and a TD. Gore 8 runs for 51 yds. And they played VERY sparingly. They both absolutely carved up our first string defense. Just embarrassing. Then their 2nd string offense comes in and makes our 1st string D look brutal. THIS is not a good sign coming off a bad year. If you thought the return of Mike Brown and Nathan Vasher was going to automatically turn things around, it looks like you were wrong.
- Hey, Robbie Gould....that was your 2nd kickoff out of bounds and 2nd missed FG from under 50yds in the last 2 weeks. Anytime you want to start earning that fat new contract.....
- Interesting that Aikman commented that Lovie thought Bazuin wasn't where he was supposed to be and was generally disappointed with his performance. I had not heard that. Further evidence that Ervin Baldwin might beat him out.
- I'm sorry but Urlacher was a big reason our D looked bad last night. I saw him whiff on a Gore tackle and totally miss the coverage on a Gore screen. I hope this isn't the season he starts to show his age.
- #68 Anthony Oakley is going to get his QB and RB killed. Would be surprised if he makes the team after seeing him stink it up last night.
- Safe to say now Rashied Davis is going to be one of the starting WRs. Call me greedy but he should have had 3 TDs. Dropped an easy one.
- Hey, Joe Buck, Forte is our 2nd round pick, not our 1st. Guess it's your preseason, too.
- In conclusion, 49ers getting over 400 yards against our defense took away any shiny, happy feelings I had about our offense showing up.

And that's all I have to say about that.

I'm still not worried about our defense. A little concerned, yeah, but not really worried.

Orton looked very, very good. I know it's just preseason, but I did not expect to be thinking "nice throw" over and over again. He's come a long way since his rookie season. We just might see a solid season from our offense and not finish in the bottom 12.

I'm not worried about the defense at all. It was an effort thing. If you think your offense is in the crapper, you aren't coming out with fire. That happened a lot last year IMO. Now that people see that Kyle can run the offense, the effort level on both sides of the ball will increase dramatically. Especially after we beat the Colts in the opener.

It was good to see Dusty in there. I think his energy is going to be key for the D line this year.

I forgot to send Good Karma to Mike brown, so someone else must have sent double.

Forte, Olsen, Orton, & Hester will make for a solid offense this year.

11-5.

It was pre-season, but that's how you expect your starter to look. He had poise, got rid of the ball when he had too, and made a lot of nice throws.

I know it's the 49ers, but Beekman looked pretty good at guard. Jones is shifty, but it will be awhile before he has his speed back.

I'm a little worried about the D as there's no excuse injury-wise, but there's plenty of thought that Babich is a bad coordinator. It surprises me to say it, but he could be on a hotter seat than Turner.

Agree no more screens to Hester. The defense sees that coming a mile away.

Tillman and Mike Brown both look a little rusty, but glad to have them there and it's great to see Dusty on the field.

Orton looked great compared to what I was expecting. He made lots of throws that were good decisions. Beekman really impressed me too

Seems to me Beekman was getting an awful lot of double-team help from Kreutz on the occasions I was paying attention.

And I AM worried about the defense. They're coming off an awful year and we're supposed to have a good indication in the 3rd preseason game where they stand. O'Sullivan and Gore made us look like absolute chumps then Alex Smith and the second stringers come in and do the same.

What do you think Peyton Manning is going to do to us? Early line should be 14 points IMO.

11-5, emperor ?? 11 and 5 ?!? I'll go with 7 and 9.

I'm thinking 10-6.

On another note, I kinda feel sorry for Rex. He loses the competition for the starting job, then Orton plays great, then he comes in and sucks royally, making the same kind of throws that led to his benching in the first place.

It was only on a few passing plays that I saw Beekman getting help from Kreutz. I'm sure there was probably stuff that I missed but watching a second time he did look pretty good from what you can tell on TV. Maybe I just have high hopes for the guy. Sounded like a major road grader in college so I would assume pass protection is something he needs to work on. The positives were when isolated he might have gave up ground, but didn't let the defender get around him.

I could just be hoping for some positive OL news too.

You legitimately believe that the Bears are better than both the Vikings and the Buccaneers? You could even lump in a healthy Rams team.

This team is baaaaad, emperor. The sooner you accept that, the easier this season will go.

I know how you feel WEFFPIM, but I legitimately think we split with the Vikings and beat the Bucs at home. This is not like I'm saying we're beating the Patriots on the road or something. The Vikes were 8-8 last year and the Bucs 9-7. Neither are world beaters.

Do people forget we had 10 (was it?) starters go out on defense last year. I've never seen a team get hit that hard on one side of the ball with injuries. And we still went 7-9 and easily could have been 8-8. No quarterback controversy, ball control offense, no Cedric Benson and health on defense and you'll see a dramatic improvement.

Return to Chicago Bears
