Simms cut by Bucs...The Bears shoud pick him up.

IMO, he's better than Ortin OR Grossman., despite limited success in TB. Go get him.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released former starting quarterback Chris Simms on Saturday as they trimmed to the roster list of 53 players.

Other notable cuts were linebacker Ryan Nece and receiver Michael Spurlock, who last season became the first player to return a kickoff for a touchdown in the Bucs' 31-year history.

The 28-year-old Simms has not played in a regular-season game in nearly two years and entered training camp fourth on the depth chart behind Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese and Luke McCown. Saturday's move left rookie Josh Johnson as the fourth quarterback.

Simms missed the final 13 games of 2005 after taking several hard hits and having his spleen removed hours after a loss to the Carolina Panthers. He spent much of last season on injured reserve when he was slow to regain his pre-injury form.

The sixth-year pro, who took over for an injured Griese and helped the Bucs win the NFC South in 2005, asked to be released during the offeason, saying a soured relationship with coach Jon Gruden was beyond repair.

I don't know, is Chris Simms REALLY an upgrade over Orton or Grossman? And even if he is, isn't he an injury concern? I can't say I know much about him but everyone is all on his nuts. I prefer to keep Grossman/Orton and see what we have in Hanie rather than bring in a guy that probably only good use is in a backup role.

Plus, he would have to learn an entirely new offense which usually takes a year in most cases. I don't think we have time for that.

Lovie's more apt to stick with "his guys". And I'm sure he'd cite that it would take Simms too long to learn the Bears "complicated" sets this late in the ball game. We're probably stuck with what we have until Orton gets mangled by our weak o-line.

I'd rather have a QB who played a game with a ruptured spleen that two quarterbacks who fumble over themselves and still throw horrible interceptions in pre-season, despite being in the NFL for 3+ years. Sign him, cut Grossman. It'll be the unofficial announcement we're going after Tim Tebow.

I'd rather see them get Culpepper as a backup. He's actually shown he can excel at QB.

Watching him in Miami, I believed they just rushed him back too soon. Oakland had a sorry a** O-line & offense, so I wouldn't hold anything against him while there. Miami had a pretty bad collection of so called talent too, come to think of it.

I just think that a guy who showed so much skill in Minnie, didn't just lose it. If his body can't take the stress fine, this is the NFL, there are no guaranteed contracts. But if he can still play, he'd be a steal.

Yeah, probably true. I don't tend to follow the NFL in the off-season like I do the NBA, so I won't know exactly how bad the Bears are going to be yet. But if they are going to sign somebody, I'd rather it be someone who actually has had some success in the league before.

The Bears should've been after Leftwich or Culpepper right away and let one of them compete w/Orton. Rex just isn't going to get the job done, ever. I'm shocked that Culpepper doesn't have a team right now. Daunte may fumble and throw bad INTs (so does Rex) but at least Daunte can see over the O-line and move a little.
