Should Caleb Hanie start?

For those who watched all the preseason games, I'm sure this thought might have crossed your mind. This kid came in non-drafted and showed amazing poise at QB. He looked relaxed in the pocket and didn't make any mistakes. He even showed agility at times escaping sacks. His 6 consecutive passes to Bradley ending in a TD pass (taken back) really impressed me, he looked like a legit QB.

I know this was preseason and his competition wasn't as hard as Orton's, but I think he showed he can be a solid quarterback in this league. I would start Orton if I was the Bears, but Hanie should definitely be taken seriously. If Orton doesn't win games, I would give Hanie the job over Rex and see what he can do. He could be out QB of the future.
(and if things don't work out we could always draft Juice Williams :D )

I agree in that it makes no sense to go back to Grossman now. Hanie should get the number 2 spot should something happen to Orton.

I haven't been able to see any of the games, but I am pleased to hear that this kid is stepping up. What we should do at QB is quite a question for me, because (and I may be in the minority) I still have faith in Rex. He's insanely inconsistent which frustrates you as a fan, but I think he has the talent to start. Obviously Orton has out-played him though, so he deserves the starting spot until he loses it. If he does lose it, then Hanie should get a look, but I also don't want to scrap Rex completely just yet.

I agree with Art that we should cut Rex and sign Simms.. why not?

Trust me, there are people within the Bears org that feel the same way.

Simms appears to be waiting for a starter on a better team (sorry, no shot intended) to get hurt and take over there instead of playing backup to Orton. Of course he could be in BAL by the end of the day too...

Meh. Orton looked great as a rookie too in preseason, then took over after Grossman got hurt and absolutely sucked. We won 11 games with him under center but that was all because of the defense in spite of Orton. Hanie looks good but let's not assume he can do that against 1st team defenses all game long, but he's definitely worth keeping around for a longer look.

Are you kidding? An undrafted rookie is not ready to start. I know everyone is enamored with Caleb Hanie. I however remember that QB playing for CSU that made mistakes and punished on the MWC cellar team.

He is a nice prospect for the future, maybe. He is at least 3-4 yrs away.

I would love to sign Simms, but whats the point when he will be behind Orton and will be lost on Offense.

Do we have a better longterm plan at QB or is it Orton/Hanie for the next 2-3 years?

Sure we do. It's whomever we select with the #1 pick in the 2009 draft.

Heck no.

Throwing a QB into the fire is a good way of ruining him. Bears should know better than anybody.

Matt Stafford or Sam Bradford #1 2009 baby

EDIT

BTW 3-4 years down the line is stretching it. I know he was undrafted, but damn!

He should be ready around the end of next season. He got a whole year to practice and get the playbook down, and next year's preseason. Plus remembert that Grossman probably won't be here next year, and there's no guarantee that Orton will be here either, with the rate the Bears go through QB's.
