Carey, Dolphins agree to deal

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Miami Dolphins on Friday signed right tackle Vernon Carey to a six-year contract.
Of Miami's five unrestricted free agents, Carey and safety Yeremiah Bell were the most significant. The Dolphins on Thursday opted not to place the franchise tag on either of them, increasing the likelihood they would hit the open market on Feb. 27.
But the Dolphins locked up Carey less than 24 hours later.
Carey, the 19th overall selection in the 2004 draft, has started 59 straight games for the Dolphins.
He started at right tackle for two years and was moved to the left side for 2007. The Dolphins switched him back last year to make room for No. 1 pick Jake Long, who made the Pro Bowl.
I think we are going OT in the 1st round now. If we are not spending money on an OT now, does that increase the likelyhood that JA will make a splash and go after Hanesworth or TJ?
Thankfully Tait dropped this retirement surprise on us early and didn't announce it mid summer.

Oh, maaaannnn !!! The options get slimmer and slimmer.
Here's what I think we'll do now. We'll go OT in the 1st round - as I predicted all along - but to avoid starting two (essentially) rookie tackles, we'll sign an older but quality free agent to take one of the starting spots until the lesser of the two young tackles gets up to speed.
Soooo....I'm talking about Tra Thomas or Jon Runyan of the Eagles (34 and 35 respectively). Again, I REALLY don't want St. Clair starting for us again.

Agreed. But I could see them just drafting an OT after signing St. Clair to start at one of the OT positions until they are sure one of the young ones is up to speed. Since RT is not as tough as LT I could see them being ok with this.
In any event, this is a great year to need an OT. The draft is loaded with monster OTs.

Your scenario is actually more likely than mine - my bias against St. Clair is probably coming through.
The Packers had success with starting two rookie OTs, actually - not sure if we could repeat that. Probably more an exception to the rule there...

Damn I was really hoping we would pursue Carey. I agree with others that now we have to draft OT in round 1. I'm hoping for Michael Oher from Mississipi. Good run blocking RT and should be who is left after the top 3 are gone.

Would love it if he slid. I'm sticking with my Britton prediction for now.

Cliff Levingston wouldn't put anything past Angelo as far as not drafting someone we'd actually need. He'll probably select Tyson Jackson still and look to address the O line later.
