Bears release guard Terrence Metcalf.

Post#1 » by emperorjones » Wed Mar 11, 2009 10:08 pm

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears on Wednesday released veteran guard Terrence Metcalf.

The 6-4, 310-pounder appeared in 84 games with 25 starts in seven seasons with the Bears after arriving in 2002 as a third-round draft pick from Mississippi.

Metcalf appeared in the first six games last season before receiving a four-game suspension from the NFL for violating the league’s policy on anabolic steroids and related substances. He was reinstated Nov. 24, but did not play in the Bears’ final five games.

Metcalf’s best season came in 2005 when he started 13 games at right guard for a Bears team that went 11-5 and won the first of back-to-back NFC North Division titles.

They're going crazy up at Halas Hall. Release the Hounds! I'm looking forward to the draft. Does this mean we take an OG day 1 or just an OT? I'm guessing we take an OT day one and an OG day 2

Metcalf was a steaming turd from Day 1. I don't think this has any impact on draft plans whatsoever - it has more to do with the signing of Omiyale.

When Metcalf wasn't sucking on the field, he was either injured or suspended. Great 3rd rd pick.

OK so what is the interior of the OLine looking like going into the draft?

LG - Omiyale, Beekman
C - Kreutz
RG - Garza, Buenning

Am I missing anyone? We really need to spend a mid round pick or 2 on the inside of the O Line.

Does long snapper Patrick Mannelly count?

The Bears roster shows Tyler Reed (Penn St) on it as well.

You can only carry so many offensive linemen, too. Not sure we'll be carrying any more than the guys you listed on the interior.

Anyone seeing Beekman beating out Garza at RG? I'm hoping he takes another step forward and improves enough to start at RG.

That would give a young line of:

LT - Williams
LG - Omiyale
C - Kreutz
RG - Beekman
RT - ( Phil Loadholt, OT, Oklahoma) 2nd round pick

That would be a line that could stick around for a while. (Yes how bored am I that I am wondering if there will be an intense competition at RG for the Bears next week).
