JA insight on the Safety position (EJ is sooo smart)

"The Safety position is becoming harder to find now [in the draft] than the corner position" - Jerry Angleo at the 3:49 mark of Inside the Draft pt. 1 http://www.chicagobears.com/multimedia/

I thought this was a very interesting quote by Angelo. Its taken totally out of context but I don't care, I need a topic to discuss.

I'm a little surprised by this because so many analyst state that if a guy can't make it at CB, you can switch him to FS. If true, it would seem easier to find a Safety (at least a FS - which we can't seem to find).

Looking back since 2002, JA has drafted 9 CBs (including Hester & Manning each originally slotted as CBs if my memory is correct) to 5 Safeties. Looking at the moves JA has made this offseason bringing in 2 FA Free Safeties and converting Zack Bowman to Safety taken together with that quote, it makes me think that he has given up on drafting that position for at least this year. He's letting two veterans and a young guy in Bowman fight it out for two FS spots.

Anyone think JA is right about this, given the fact that we seem to be one of the few teams that can't seem to get the FS position right?

Once again EJ looks so smart when quoting himself. JA basically told us he was not drafting a safety (or at least did not consider it a priority). I got NO RUN on this thread when I posted it in March. How ya like me now? :eyebrows:

Would have noooo problem going this route if we picked up a WR via free agency.

As long as we're tooting our own horns and all.

So I had him pegged in Rd2 versus Rd3. Sue me.

But props on the call with the safety position, EJ.

Oh right Chewie. Because you totally thought about GIlbert first

(This was in February)

6'5 290, 39 inch vert as a DT? I'll TAKE IT.

I thought you were kidding.

You know, just because you kept egging me because I wanted Kenny Britt I have to take away some of your shine too

Edit: For the record I ended up wanting Robsikie more than Britt :( but we didn't get either.

Wow you guys were up on Gilbert early. That kinda puts my "no safety" prediction to shame.

He was an Youtube sensation. So it wasn't that big of a prediction.

That's right - you did turn me on to Gilbert! Props to you!

The trick is to predict a bunch of guys over time then when one gets actually picked you quote yourself and you seem like a genius. Kenny Britt you say? Never heard of him....

Friend_Of_Haley wrote:Okay, here's my idea on an ideal, but possible draft.

Bears decide there isn't a WR worth it at 49 and trade down. I'm gonna go with 49 &119 to the Patriots for 58 & 89. (Another possibility is #49 to Titans for #62 an #94. Obviously either depends on the team agreeing to it. Something along these lines though).

#58- Rashad Johnson, FS, Alabama
#89- Juanquin Iglesias, WR, Oklahoma
#99- Darry Beckwith (LSU), Jason Phillips (TCU), or Zach Follet (Cal), LB
#140- Michael Bennet or Brandon Williams, DE, Texas A&M/Tech
#154- Marko Mitchell, WR, Nevada
#190- Brandon Hughes, CB, Oregon State
#246- QB
#251- OL

The DE,LB, and second WR could really go in a few different orders, depending on who's there and such, but thats just a general idea.

Friend of Haley with the top two picks - nice.

Points deducted for misspelling Juaquin.

Its alright, I get even bigger deductions for my options at LB in round 3. Phillips went 5th round I think. Beckwith went undrafted, and Follet went in the 7th.

Do I get props for suggesting a DE from a Texas school too (even though I got the wrong school).

Good chops Haley!

I would've been really impressed, bordering on the thought of an inside connection, if you had told me they didn't really want a WR, and it was a smoke screen for a S.

My only inside connection is the internet and my own speculative brain.
