Jay Cutler Reaches Out to Plaxico Burress

According to a report by Zack Zaidman on the Score Sports Radio in Chicago, Plaxico Burress has been contacted by new Chicago Bears Quarterback Jay Cutler.

Zaidman saw Burress at the Final Four in Detroit. The former New York Giants Wide Receiver was there to support Michigan State, his alma mater. According to Zaidman, Cutler sent Burress a text message saying they could use him in Chicago.

Burress relayed that he loves Garrett's popcorn and Giordano's Pizza. He was also reportedly contacted by Donovan McNabb and former teammate Ben Roethlisberger.

After being released by the Giants, Burress was awarded $1 millon as a part of a grievance filed against the Giants last season for withholding bonuses from last season.

He would be a perfect fit on the field for the Bears. Running back Matt Forte led the Bears in receptions last season with 63. Devin Hester led the Bears with only 665 yards and Greg Olson paced the Bears with five touchdowns.

All Burress needs to do now is clear up that felony weapons charge hanging over him. There are indications is going to be able to plea the charges into a misdemeanor. That would likely reduce his prison sentence to three to four months.

Don't doubt that Burress will land somewhere. His agent is Drew Rosenhaus. Rosenhaus is also the agent for Terrell Owens. The other teams likely to make a play other than the Bears, Steelers and Eagles are the Vikings and Raiders.

With a pro bowl quarterback on their roster for the first time in a generation, now the Bears need to go get Jay Cutler a play maker. If the Bears are able to get Burress, they will a statement that they are a serious contender in the NFC.

Other big name receivers the Bears might consider include Torry Holt and Marvin Harrison. How good the Bears will be offensively might be determined on their ability to find Cutler a play maker on the outside.

not the most reliable source though and too bad he's most likely going to jail as well...

Match this, Raiders.

If the Vikes step up to the plate, we need to do this not only for ourselves but to keep him from a big division rival. And does he really want Tavaris Jackson/Sage Rosenfels throwing to him ?

It would be great for him if he got a plea deal for 3-4 months and was allowed to serve it from February-May 2010. The best part about this article is that for the first time we are a potential desired destination for top tier free agents. Guys want to play with a top QB. That's why T.J. turned down the Vikings. I love it!

That sounds hilarious. We're actually in position to say that we have a marquee QB to attract high end free agents.

We have Hester advocating for Holt and now Cutler for Burress...hopefully JA is diligently working under the radar again to secure one of these top tier WRs available.

Cutler reaching to Burress is not exactly a confidence builder or ringing endorsement of the current receiving corps... so hopefully they do not get offended and request a trade. :D

Cliff Levingston's wonders if Cutler contacting Burress has anything to do with the Bears' interest level in him. Hopefully it means that Angelo/Lovie have talked with Cutler, informing him of their interest in Burress before he actually contacted him. Otherwise, it probably wouldn't do a bit of good for Cutler to contact him only to later find out that Angelo has no interest.

Once again, Burress + Hester + Olsen + Forte + Cutler = :D

Not looking at the potential jail time, which of course has an effect on when he'd have to serve it: Doesn't he face some kind of league suspension?

That said, even if he misses the first 4 games, it's still worth it to get him.

That was my thinking but I'm still not sure how much faith I have in news coming from "The Bleacher Report".

You'd have to consider the Bears legit Super Bowl contenders if we landed Plaxico. I have faith our defense will return somewhat back to form under Lovie and Marinelli.

I won't lie, Burress would be a great fit here. But the guy is facing jail time and a suspension as well.

Tough sell for Angelo I bet....

You would have to assume Burress' suspension would be lighter considering he was suspended the final four games of last year. I know it was the Giants who suspended him, but it would seem double punishment to suspend him again. I think something like two games, but not anything major.

But you got to love Burress as a WR. Then you can maybe sell Torry Holt on the Bears and then you have an elite offense where everyone fits their roles.

QB Cutler
WR Burress, Holt, Hester
RB Forte
TE Olsen, Clark
T Pace, Williams
G Omiyale, Shaffer
C Kreutz

Thats a top 5-8 offense IMO. Bears use their #2 and #3 on DE and LB and then use the other picks on filling roster spots at S, QB, and CB. Dare I say its a super bowl contender?

He discharged and shot himself with an illegal weapon in a crowded nightclub. I don't think Goodell's suspension is going to be light. I think he sits a year.

A year? Whoa!

I was thinking like DanTown - the fact that he already served 4 games in '08 should count for something. He's probably in store for 4 more games and then a meeting with Goodell where he'll have to say the right things and generally avoid pissing on his desk.

That meeting will be hard to attend when he's in jail

Never underestimate the power of the plea bargain and/or a shortened sentence due to overcrowding.

He's not going to jail. I'm thinking he sits 4 games. This will get pled down to 2nd Degree Reckless Endangerment. He'll get 1 year probation and 4 game suspension from the Commish.

I sincerely hope you are right in your assessment of the Burress situation.....If so, we need to call him in for a sit down with JA and Cutler and cut a deal!

That would be appropriate for a first time offender where the gun was not discharged in connection with any altercation. If he was not a football player this would likely be the route the court would take. I have a friend here in Chicago that was DUI and pulled a gun on two guys in a car next to him and threatened to shoot them - he got community service and 2 years probation. If he had played for the Bears - whoa.
