I don't mind more line guys, but at the same position?

Well... I guess Angelo said Jarron Gilbert at DT.

Over the summer prior to the 2007 Longhorn football season, Melton and teammate Sergio Kindle were arrested in separate incidents on charges of driving while intoxicated. Both players were suspended from the team for the first three games of the season. They were required to do community service and missed the first two days of practice in order to visit with a woman whose son was crippled by a drunk driver.

Now if he had impregnated that woman, he'd be perfect for this team.

Strengths:
Extremely athletic...Pretty good speed and quickness...Explosive with a burst...Great balance and agility...Does a terrific job in pursuit and closes fast...Good strength...Great special teamer...Has a lot of upside.

Weaknesses:
Inexperienced...Marginal instincts and awareness...Still has a long way to go when it comes to technique...Not an elite pass rusher...Does not always use proper leverage...Aggressiveness?...Some character issues.

Notes:
Was a Top 100 recruit coming out of high school according to Rivals...Uncle, Ray Crockett, played 14 years in the NFL with Detroit, Denver & Kansas City and was a captain for the Broncos back-to-back Super Bowl teams...Began his college career as a running back and carried the ball 132 times for 625 yards (4.7 avg.) and 16 touchdowns in 2005 and 2006...Moved to defensive end in 2007 and took over a starting job in 2008...Served a three game suspension in 2007 after he was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated...Was overshadowed by Brian Orakpo but is a fine pro prospect in his own right...Isn't a finished product but improved by leaps and bounds as a senior and has all of the physical tools that you look for...Underrated.

Could see this pick coming from a mile away. If we're going to spend some picks defensively, might as well go with the defensive line. A good pass rush/good line play makes the secondary and linebackers that much better.

Cliff Levingston would've liked a safety as well but it looks like some good ones are dropping. We could probably get one later.

Big NFL LB?

This guy sounds like a candidate for the Lovie red shirt. If he spends a year working with Marinelli he should be much improved with technique and understanding the position, but its up to whether he and any other D-line guy is receptive to coaching and working.

I trust Jerry to pick at least 3 Safety/CBs late and at least hit on one or two...he always seems solid finding potential at those positions late in the draft.

This draft will get an A from me no matter who we pick as I consider Jay Cutler part of this draft class :-)

I like that it says one of his strengths is special teams. I think the staff looks for guys in these middle rounds who can contribute on special teams.

We usually always win the special teams battle, even without Hester getting TD returns.

Pick Analysis:He's an athlete with speed. He had an unbelievable pro day, running a 4.65 in the 40-yard dash. He came into Texas as a highly regarded running back before eventually transitioning to defensive end two years ago. He's got a great first move in the pass rush and really good explosion.

6'3" 260 runs a 4.65? :o
Lovie loves his speed. maybe he drops 10 lbs and moves to LB?

Guy was great to watch at FB/RB. Every time he ran he carried three defenders with him. Should be interesting to see what Marinelli can do with him.

He's strictly a DE. Why the hell would he play LB?

He's an awesome athlete and O-Gun is a FA at the end of the year. Combine that with Alex Brown being average and Mark Anderson being a complete dog and you need a DE.

I think he will play in 2009 and do well.

Because he has the athleticism to do it? I donno. I don't know why he is strictly a DE. Looking at Briggs too, he was a converted RB and it seemed to work out for him.

He's athletic for sure though.

If he winds being a situational specialty player I would love to see him in a few offensive series as a full back to block, pound the ball in the end zone or to get a tough yard.

I have always wanted us to get a big mammoth size lead FB in the backfield to create bigger holes for or RBs. He ran the ball pretty successfully ...so maybe we can run a powerback formation every once in a while.

Do you guys think that we'll have more rotations on the d-line this year?

Ogunleye would get more rest, and there would be less of a chance of Tommie/Dusty getting injured.

With Melton playing DE and Gilbert playing DE/DT we could do a lot of rotations. How often does Marinelli usually rotate guys on the D-line?

Marinelli and Lovie seems to come from the same school of thought. You'd better believe we'll be rotating guys frequently on the defensive line, and we've got a lot to use now, especially at defensive tackle:
- Tommie Harris
- Anthony Adams
- Dusty Dvoracek
- Marcus Harrison
- Israel Idonije
- Jarron Gilbert

Yikes!
