Mike Brown to KC

http://blogs.suntimes.com/bears/2009/05 ... ew_mi.htmlMeanwhile, veteran safety Mike Brown remains without a team. It's not by choice at this point. Multiple league sources said Brown plans to continue his playing career and one source said he wants to prove that he's still able to perform at the top of his game. The problem he faces right now is the later it gets, and the more teams that go through minicamps and proceed into their offseason programs, the more difficult it is going to be to find work. Teams want to get players up to speed on their schemes and playbook in the spring so they can hit the field running in training camp.
Some thought Brown would land a job quickly after the draft after teams assessed what was on their roster and where they needed to fill holes with a secondary venture into the free-agent market. That has not happened. Whether or not teams have expressed interest in Brown, we don't know, but he could surely be had for the league minimum at this point. Few players signed in May are going to get much different.
I may be a little bit biased, because Mike Brown has been my favorite player since his rookie year, but I definitely think that the Bears should sign him if they can get him to agree to the league minimum.
Sure, maybe Mike shouldn't start because of his injuries/age, but he's a good locker room guy and our weakest position on the field is the safety position. If nothing else he proves us depth.

Even when we were publicly cutting ties with him, I was convinced Brown would be back. Now DJ Moore is wearing #30 in camp and I'm thinking Angelo isn't even considering him. The guy's a born leader and great locker room player - I'm not sure why we wouldn't give him a ring.
I AM amused that Rex is still without a team - despite switching over to Drew Rosenhaus as his agent. According to ESPN, Rosenhaus was using Twitter to drum up interest :
"Free agent QB Rex Grossman has been training hard on a daily basis and is looking forward to signing with a team in time for OTA's."
Oy.

Cliff Levingston will miss Brown for the memories, but not for his current play. For one, we can't use a valuable roster spot on him due to the injury concerns and he simply isn't good enough to fill the need we have at free safety right now; might as well try Zack Bowman there instead.
Good luck to Mike though.

Love Mike Brown for all of the stated reasons but got tired of watching him take bad angles in order to make up for his lost speed. The guy will be a great coach someday if he wants, but its time to hang them up.

If you can get him for a reasonable price, get him! A leader and solid safety when healthy.

Update via wiretap:
http://football.realgm.com/src_wiretap_ ... cleveland/Plain-Dealer - Mike Brown, a former All-Pro safety with the Bears, visited the Browns on Monday, a source told The Plain Dealer. It's not yet known if the Browns are interested in signing him, but he is drawing interest from other teams, the source said.
Brown, 31, would most likely provide veteran depth behind starters Abram Elam and Brodney Pool. A free agent since February when the Bears let his contract expire, Brown also visited the Chiefs last week.
Man, I would love this. The Brown are my 2nd favorite team in the NFL because my mom is friends with Joe Thomas' mom. If they had Mike Brown, they'd have 2 of my favorite players in the NFL.
The wiretap states that Brown would come off the bench. Do you guys think that getting a lot of rest would allow Mike to play quick enough, or do you think that he's done?

No. It'll keep him healthy but won't make him faster. He's lost a few steps from where he used to be but he's still smart and instinctive enough to be serviceable.

Mike Brown is a great coach waiting to happen. That's his future and the only way we should bring him back. I love Mike Brown and would welcome him with open arms to the coaching staff, but not on the field.

I'd welcome him back on the field for a cheap price. Good leader, player, just needs to stay healthy.

http://football.realgm.com/src_wiretap_ ... ety_brown/Kansas City Star - The Chiefs have signed veteran safety Mike Brown to a contract.
Brown is a nine-year veteran and made the Pro Bowl with the Bears in 2005.
He has missed 44 games over the past five seasons because of injuries and Chicago made no effort to re-sign him after last season. [READ]
Well, I'll be rooting for the Chiefs when they don't play the Bears.

Everytime I hear Kansas City, I think of Mike Brown and I smile.
84 total tackles, 3 interceptions, 3 pass deflections, 2 sacks, 1 fumble recovery.
Best stat.
14 games started.
