Griese to be released... do we take a flyer?

I don't see there being as big a premium on having developmental prospects at qb now that we have a long term answer. What we need is a back up we can trust to take the helm for a game or two when we need it.

Griese knows our offense... is he the guy?

I doubt the Bears bring him back after he basicly ignored R. Turners play calling and called his own plays during a game (Phil. I think ?) a few years back.

Hell no. I'd rather have Hanie as our backup. If we go for a vet I'd rather have Rex. Griese? God...no.

I would rather have Rex too.

At least he can have a good game.

I'm surprised to see everyone react to Griese like that. When he was here last, every Bears fan I can remember was riding his nuts.

At least Rex could have a good game?

A couple of reminders on Griese:

1. He made a pro bowl for having "good games".

2. In one of his few starts with us, you would have to argue he had one of the best 2 minute drills we've had leading to a game winning touchdown. Someone else wisely pointed out that may actually be a point of contention because he wasn't executing RT's plays due to a headset malfunction... so that may have been a deal killer, but I don't know how you could knock the performance.

3. He had a career game AGAINST us for the Buccanaires LAST SEASON.

I'm not knocking Rex or saying he cannot have a good game or even that he wouldn't be better to bring back... I'm just saying that implying that Griese cannot be capable of having a good game or being a solid backup is baseless.

Something else that is interesting to note... one of the only knocks I've heard on Cutler is that he likes to go out and drink (coupled with his diabetes... there could be legitimate worry about that). Griese also got his start in Denver (also to try to fill Elway's shoes) and also was known to have the same issue at the time. Griese also knows this offense inside and out. Maybe he'd be the ultimate backup not just on the field, but also off the field since he could likely relate to Cutler so well.

Say no to Griese and HELL NO to Grossman. We have our man. let's let some of these newbies develop behind Cutler for awhile.

Is that what is best for a backup qb right now? A project to develop? If JC is the man... aren't we just looking for a capable performer when its needed? Are we in championship mode or rebuilding mode?

I understand your point but my view stays the same. NO to Griese and HELL NO to Grossman. If it's a capable backup they want there's others out there who aren't two bum retreads.

Griese is not that good, Grossman is not that good.

Grossman is younger, knows our offense, is capable of having a good game, still has potential.

Not that I'm counting on Grossman for anything but it's still there.

Here's another argument against two developmental projects under Cutler (whether its for Griese or Grossman... it doesn't matter).

In training camp, we're going to want Cutler to get at least 75% of the snaps. This wouldn't leave a lot left over for two young projects to get in tune with the offense and personnel. If we had someone who didn't need the reps backing up Cutler, we'd be square. Caleb Hanie has at least had last season's reps to work with in addition to anything he gets this season. If we can get one more former Bear or WC qb in there with experience... we could focus on Cutler developing timing and fluency in this system and enhance his success rate starting in week 1.

I would take Griese as a backup. He's solid, assuming we don't need to use him as a starter. As someone else mentioned though, he kind of burned the coaches and I don't think they'll want him back.

Turner's ego won't allow us to bring him back after Griese's comments about the two minute drill got him released.

That said I think there's a lot worse options than having Griese as a backup. You can still develop Hanie or even Patton if he sticks and Hanie goes to practice squad. Griese knows the system and isn't going to need a lot of reps so it's not going to hinder Cutler learning the playbook or our 3rd QB/developmental QB from getting their time.
