Corey Graham's move to free safety has begun

There is a newcomer to the mix at free safety and it would not be a surprise if he quickly becomes a favorite to lock down the job.

As Lovie Smith suggested at the end of the rookie minicamp earlier this month, Corey Graham will get a look at the position.

He has been lining up at free safety at the start of today's first OTA at Halas Hall. The move signals another significant development. It means the Bears have confidence that former Pro Bowl right cornerback Nathan Vasher will rebound to form or rookie fourth-round pick D.J. Moore will quickly be ready for the job.

Graham made nine starts at right cornerback last season after injuries derailed Vasher for a second consecutive season. Graham finished fifth on the team in tackles with 93, two ahead of left cornerback Charles Tillman, and had one interception and six pass deflections. The position has been under scrutiny all offseason as the Bears look to move forward from the Mike Brown era. The Bears drafted Oregon State's Al Afalava in the sixth round but most project him as a strong safety and that is where the Bears will start him. Asked specifically about free safety at the conclusion of the rookie minicamp, Smith rattled off the names of every safety on the roster. Then he said, "Look at other players. We have Corey Graham.''

"We have a lot of different options,'' Smith added. ``You can print [Tillman] is ruled out. But the rest of it, you know, it will work itself out. We're trying to get as many athletes as we can and give ourselves as many options as possible. We're going to be fine.''

Graham to safety is something the Bears experimented with briefly at the end of his rookie season in 2007 when injuries had wiped out the depth chart. He's been solid in run support as a cornerback and that is certainly a big responsibility at safety. What the Bears have really lacked for some time is a player with range and Graham would provide that. Also in the mix will be free-agent pickup Josh Bullocks. Even if Afalava is an option, his transition will have to wait for training camp. He will miss the bulk of OTA's because he is not allowed to show up until after Oregon State's graduation--June 13. The Bears will have four OTA dates between then and the conclusion of the voluntary offseason workout program June 18.

  Angelo said they'd get the four best guys on the field. I'm glad they're leaving Manning in the Nickle. This also means that either Moore is THE MAN or Vasher is back...or both. Good news good news...

GREAT news, and something that never really occurred to Cliff Levingston when thinking about that position. If he can lock it down the way we need him to alongside Payne or Steltz at SS (which is solid) then we would be in great shape heading into the season.

CB
1. Tillman
2. Vasher
3. Moore
4. McBride

Nickel
1. Manning
2. Moore

FS
1. Graham
2. Bullocks
3. Bowman

SS
1. Payne
2. Steltz
3. Afalava

Can't see us carrying that many DBs though.

Agreed and you forgot we signed Glen Earl.

SS: Payne/Steltz
FS: Graham/Bullocks

and I'm thinking only one of Alfalfa, Earl and Bowman make it. I'd put my money on Bowman (special teams and flexibility to play corner) with Alfafalla dropping to the practice squad and Earl getting shocased in preseason and winding up elsewhere (our new DB coach was his coach in Houston and may be doing a favor helping him get back in the league).

Actually, Cliff Levingston didn't forget Earl, he just didn't put Earl on there cause we've got so many already.

So you'd carry 5 CBs: Tillman, Vasher, Moore, McBride and Manning... and 5 safeties: Graham, Bullocks, Payne, Steltz and Bowman.

Imagine if only Manning would've worked out at FS; this wouldn't be an issue. :)

Don't feel like making a whole new topic for this so I'll put it here. Brad Biggs is reporting the Bowman to free safety experiment is over already. Looks like he's partly speculating, though :

*** If we didn't mention it Wednesday, looks like the Zack Bowman to safety movement has ended. He was back at left cornerback filling in for Charles Tillman (shoulder). With Graham going to safety it's fair to assume Bowman will remain at cornerback.

I think Briggs is jumping the gun. Wasn't McBride out too?

EDIT: Maybe I should shut my trap:

From ChicagoBears.com

I read on ChicagoBears.com about Corey Graham being shifted from cornerback to free safety. Whatever happened to the plan the Bears had to make the same move with Zackary Bowman?

Second-year pro Zackary Bowman was switched from cornerback to free safety earlier in the offseason, and while he performed well at the new position, he is more comfortable at cornerback and has since been moved back to that spot. By the way, Bowman made an excellent play in Thursday’s OTA practice, intercepting a Jay Cutler pass in the right flat. (It was the only interception I saw Cutler throw in the two OTA sessions.) Bowman worked quite a bit with the No. 1 defense in place of Charles Tillman, who participated in individual drills but was held out of team work while he recovers from shoulder surgery.

Bowman looks to be the #5 CB and a game-day inactive if things stay status quo, unless he really steps up on special teams. Kinda depends on the DB vs. OL debate on how many they keep active.

I would not be surprised if Steltz is the odd man out at safety, and I have heard the Bears would have no problem with that. Bullocks can play either spot well enough to back up both and he's a lot rangier.

Edit--I still think Bowman would make an excellent outside cover man if his knee holds up, and if the now-quiet rumblings about dumping Vasher heat up again that would be one of the reasons. Haven't heard anything on that in awhile though.
