In other Bears' bad news....

Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee within the past two weeks, a source close to the player confirmed Thursday.

Forte admitted to suffering a medial collateral ligament sprain after the Bears' 25-19 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 27. It was an injury former offensive coordinator Ron Turner cited as a reason for the Bears' mediocre running attack.

"I think there was a drop-off [after the MCL injury], definitely," Turner said after the Bears season-ending victory in Detroit. "I don't think he had the acceleration or the burst we normally see from him. Yeah, it definitely had an affect."

After rushing for 1,238 yards as a rookie in 2008, Forte slumped to 929 yards this season. He averaged 3.6 yards a carry, down from 3.9 in 2008.

The story was first reported by the Chicago Tribune.

That's why the good teams have at least 2 decent RBs to choose from.

What doesn't jibe is that Forte wasn't exactly lighting it up before the Seattle game.

9/13 @ GB : 22 rushes for 55 yds
9/20 PIT : 13 rushes for 29 yds

And he had his best rushing game right after the Seattle game in which they claim the injury occurred (12 rushes for 121 yds vs DET). Might have something to do with the opponent, though.

I'd treat RB as a position of need this offseason. Kevin Jones can't stay healthy, Garrett Jones is coming off a major injury and wasn't good even when healthy, and "the other" Adrian Peterson is good for special teams only and will be 31. I don't want Khalil Bell as my only other option outside of Forte going into 2010.

This explains a lot.

He looked noticeably slower with lackluster play.... despite atrocious O-line play.

Hopefully, Forte recovers and can regain his burst with a new OC coordinator, new O-line Coach, new system and new O-linemen.

Chester Taylor would be a nice pick-up to help in the backfield...if it's possible.

If he had a knee injury for that long, why didn't he just not play?

I shake in horror knowing for a while our only active running back would have been Khalil Bell. Not knocking him or anything but man, that would have beeeeen awful.

If he wasn't healthy, he shouldn't have played. Period.

I agree. I was merely pointing out that we would be in loads of trouble when it came to the running game without him(nightmarish conditions I might add)

I can't help but ask how you feel about the Tommie Harris situation then. It's clear he's never 100% healthy, does that mean he shouldn't play?
