Trib: Vasher may be cut

Cornerback Nathan Vasher could be in danger of being released. There's no such thing as having too many cornerbacks on the roster, but Vasher has had opportunities to regain his status over the last two seasons and he finished last season as an occasional contributor.

Vasher is set to make $2.95 million in 2010 and also has a $500,000 workout bonus. He has made just 11 starts since signing a $28 million, five-year extension before the 2007 season. That's a lot of money to pay a player who doesn't figure into the nickel package.

The only problem for the Bears is they don't have established depth at cornerback behind Charles Tillman and Zack Bowman, starters who have dealt with injury issues over the last two seasons. Corey Graham seems to have fallen out of favor, and D.J. Moore didn't see much playing time as a rookie and might be too short to be a regular contributor at his generously listed height of 5-foot-9.

The question becomes: Do the Bears want to cut a veteran who knows the system before they have a suitable replacement on board? In the past, general manager Jerry Angelo has given a nod of respect to veterans who have gone about their business professionally and released them sooner rather than later in order to aid their chances on the open market.

That's a lot of money for someone so bad. I could see it happening.

What?!?!?!

I thought he was cut from the team 2 years ago? Wasn't that some unproven walkon that was wearing #31 these last 2 seasons?

If they need help cutting him I'll gladly walk to Halas Hall to assist.

Long overdue. Most overrated CB in Bears history. He made a few good plays in the years the D dominated.

I was telling everyone we should of cut him 2 years ago. His rise to fame was his record FG return TD that happened so long ago I don't remember the year it happened.

I really think we need to cut our entire secondary and start over. There isn't one decent secondary on our team. And please don't say Tillman is good.

Tillman is good.. he kept us in a lot of games this past season... and it would be dumb to cut vasher, who is a solid player and has shown talent to be one but is just in a slump for reasons unknown. If we let him go.. this is goin to be a case of letting Chris Harris go and watching him shine as a solid safety. I'm tired of JA letting players go, assuming 1st year players can play the same way as a player who has been in the system for 3,4,5 years that have contributed in some ways.
