:( :( :( :(

he's clearly frustrated... omg... that was the worst interview you can ever have. it was just awkward... i hope marvin lewis, carson and tj can cheer him up and do something!! there is absolutely no way the bengals trade him. he's the most profitable and one of the most important player on this team!

it's also funny to note that all the people at nfl network wanted him to stay.. HE IS A BENGAL!!!

i hope i can write a letter or email him...

Yeah, it's becoming a lot more clear that Chad is frustrated with the team at present and the FO in general. I can see this continuing on.

If it's about money, the FO should try to be flexible with him. If it's because the team is crap, well, this offseason should be big.

And, of course, Chad should be shopped at all costs. An impact defensive player would great, but who could we realistically get?

Everything I've heard from people who would know is that Marvin Lewis is the "unnamed team source" trying to get rid of Johnson and make him unhappy. And Chad knows it.

I don't believe this is about money at all--it's about Marvin Lewis looking for a scapegoat for why he's an awful head coach. He found a willing mark in Johnson, whose insecurity and propensity for talking too much belie his great talent and fan favorite status. If Johnson were smart he'd just shut up, let Lewis hang himself, suffer thru what could be a real bad 2008 and then be primed for a huge 2009 with a better head coach and an infusion of more young talent.

I think Lewis is one of the worst coaches in the league, no secret there. Here's why:

--Poor gameplan management. The Bengals are one of the easiest teams to prep for because they're running the same sets and schemes all the time. Esp. defensively, where they almost never vary the gameplan based on the opponent.

--Inaiblity to control his players. Yes he drew soem bad eggs, but other teams have guys with the same iffy character and other than a couple of prominent instances, those guys get reigned in by the coach and the team. Not in Cincy, where Lewis' lack of people skills created an environment conducive for chaos.

--Lewis is allegedly a defensive guru, but the defenses in Cincy have consistently not performed to the level of the talent. This is not a D devoid of talent; Geathers and Smith are a pretty good DE tandem, Brooks has talent, Joseph has talent, both rookie safeties last season are impressive, even Hall and O'Neal have flashed strong potential at different times. This is more macro than micro to me, more long-term than short term. He got away with not scheming well and not teaching/player development well in Baltimore because that was a special collection of some truly amazing talent. His Cincy units have needed more hands-on guidance, more teaching, more designs that play to their strengths. Lewis has not done any of that.

--Special teams, which I believe is a strong reflection upon the head coach. They've consistently stunk under Lewis. It's not the best way to track, as Dungy's teams have traditionally stunk too, but with all the athleticism and speed on this team, they shouldn't be in the bottom 3rd in pretty much every ST category every year.

then who is the perfect coach for the bengals?

marvin lewis is treated like jesus in cincy. he's the guy that brought the bengals to an 8-8 season in his first year.

i don't know but i agree with most of your arguments.

Lewis is on the hottest of seats, but he's safe thru the bye next season anyways.

I think Brian Billick would be perfect, but I admittedly have an intellectual man crush on him. Plus the Brown family wouldn't pay him what he wants.

If the Raiders sack Lane Kiffin I would hope the Bengals give him a long look. I think once he gets more experience he's going to be a very good coach.

I'm not down on this team nearly as much as a lot of folks. Lots of things have to go just right, but this is a team capable of winning a playoff game with what they've got right now. But the lineup is getting a bit stale, and if they don't start fast, it's going to be ugly in River City again.
It's not whether you win or lose, it's how good you look playing the game

An addendum to this discussion: monkeyfeng's favorite coach, Hue Jackson, recently left to join the Ravens. The exodus has begun.

Lewis still being here is likely the result of the Browns' inability to conduct a real coaching search. Despite a number of unfortunate injuries, this team badly underperformed this year and is likely to be worse, not better, next year.
