Should the Bengals go for broke this year?

Post#1 » by PhilipNelsonFan » Mon Mar 10, 2008 12:16 am

Looking at the bare bones of this team, it is not out of the question to see the Bengals as a competitive football team in the near future. The question is, is this the year?

The Bengals have been proactive this offseason, even though most of their efforts have been for naught. They've lost some pieces but added some minor ones as well that should really help. And the Bengals have set themselves up for success in the draft recently.

Looking down the list of needs, these still need to be filled:

-RB situation must be figured out to an extent
-WR who can contend with Chris Henry for the No. 3 receiver
-Complete TE; failing that, a receiving TE
-At least one more G, T, or C from a deep OL draft class
-New DT and DE (Sedrick Ellis is looking more and more likely by the day)
-At least 2 new LBs
-A nickel corner would be lovely, as well

Some things I believe the Bengals should look into:

-Trading down from ninth overall if Ellis and Dorsey are both off the board
-Trading with Dallas for one of their first-rounders in order to secure Rashard Mendenhall or Jonathan Stewart
-If the Bengals can get one of those two, trade Rudi in a package deal or for a mid-round pick
-Compensatory selections (at least two are likely; as many as four could be obtained)
-By the looks of things, a good WR can still be had in the fourth round or later, but Cincy would be wise to take two DL or two LBs in the first three rounds
-If he checks out physically, Brian Paysinger (WR, Oregon) would be a seventh-round steal. He was probably in contention for a mid-round spot until he suffered an ACL injury, and it was supposedly pretty serious with possible nerve damage. If he's medically cleared to play, Paysinger could be the No. 4 that Cincinnati needs.
-This is a very weak TE class and the Bengals never really use that spot anyway, so that's one need that can be somewhat forsaken this year
