It depends who is up there with him. If it's the Hornets and Lakers, I think Paul and Kobe would both get more votes than Yao. And I think KG and LeBron are going to get a lot of votes. Yao, really, doesn't have a chance this year.

For the past 20 plus YEARS, no MVP was chosen from a team that do NOT have the best top 3 record in it's conference. I can support this argument with the following table.
Year Player Team Rank by Record
2006-07: Dirk Nowitzki - Dallas (1st in NBA)
2005-06: Steve Nash - Phoenix (3rd in West)
2004-05: Steve Nash - Phoenix (1st in NBA)
2003-04: Kevin Garnett - Minnesota (1st in West, 2nd in NBA)
2002-03: Tim Duncan - San Antonio (1st in NBA)
2001-02: Tim Duncan - San Antonio (Tied 2nd in West, Tied 2nd in NBA)
2000-01: Allen Iverson - Philadelphia (1st in East, Tied 2nd in NBA)
1999-00: Shaquille O'Neal - LA Lakers (1st in NBA)
1998-99: Karl Malone - Utah (1st in NBA, Lockout season)
1997-98: Michael Jordan - Chicago (1st in East, Tied 1st in NBA)
1996-97: Karl Malone - Utah (1st in West, 2nd in NBA)
1995-96: Michael Jordan - Chicago (1st in NBA)
1994-95: David Robinson - San Antonio (1st in NBA)
1993-94: Hakeem Olajuwon - Houston (2nd in West, 2nd in NBA)
1992-93: Charles Barkley - Phoenix (1st in NBA)
1991-92: Michael Jordan - Chicago (1st in NBA)
1990-91: Michael Jordan - Chicago (1st in East, 2nd in NBA)
1989-90: Magic Johnson - LA Lakers (1st in NBA)
1988-89: Magic Johnson - LA Lakers (1st in West, 2nd in NBA)
1987-88: Michael Jordan - Chicago (3rd in East)
1986-87: Magic Johnson - LA Lakers (1st in NBA)
1985-86: Larry Bird - Boston (1st in NBA)
1984-85: Larry Bird - Boston (1st in NBA)
1983-84: Larry Bird - Boston (1st in NBA)
1982-83: Moses Malone - Philadelphia (1st in NBA)
As you can see with the exception of very few former MVPs, most of them led their teams with the best season record. Based on history, it's safe for us to say that if your team is one of the Top 3 teams in your conference, your best player will have some MVP consideration.
Team record is more relevant than individual statistics in determining the MVP. I am not trying to dismiss statistics, what I am trying to say is that stats are second to team record. So if Houston makes Top 3 in the West, and Yao maintains his 20+/10+ status, he'll be in heavy consideration.
There are 29 more games for us to play, and that's more than enough time to prove what Yao and the team can achieve.

NO. If the Lakers start to win games after this recent trade, there is no way in hell the writers are going to vote for Kobe.
The MVP IMO is Chris Paul, that team is like the 2004-2005 Suns, came out unexpected, and is led by a PG that is putting up 20pts-11ast-almost 3stl-4reb.
Yao cannot win it, he did a good job leading when Tmac was out, but I doubt it highly, hopefully he makes the all NBA first team tough.

he'll def. be in consideration if we finish top 3 in the conference. but he doesn't have to do everything like a few other players are doing (paul, bron, kobe). but he certainly should be top 5 if we keep going at this pace. but yao struggled to start the year and still has lapses of inconsistency on the road.
also, where's the dude that said yao is having a jermaine o'neal like year? this is his best overall year.
i'm very impressed with yao last night. he usually struggles on b2b, but damn he was impressive.
