Carl Landy getting some love

Post#1 » by dream34 » Fri Feb 29, 2008 12:30 am

Yet one player has been even more impressive than Young, at least in his rookie season. His name is Carl Landry ... or as I've taken to calling him, Carl Landry!

As in, guess who's averaging 19.3 points and 12.9 boards per 40 minutes? Carl Landry! Can you believe who's shooting 62.7 percent from the floor? Carl Landry! Do you know who's fifth among all power forwards in rebound rate, ahead of David Lee and Kevin Garnett? My goodness, it's Carl Landry! Care to guess who's leading all rookies in PER? Yep ... Carl Landry! Better yet, have you heard who has the best PER on a 37-20 Houston team with two perennial All-Stars? Would you believe ... Carl Landry!

...

I'll grant that his numbers have only been generated in 377 minutes and it seems unlikely that he can keep up quite such a prolific pace. Nonetheless, any discussion of the league's top rookies has to include Landry. He's been brilliant at both ends when he's played, and it's not his fault he was nailed to the bench for half the season.

Nice insight from John Hollinger, talking about the rookie race. There is more to it in the article.

Oh in the same article by Hollinger, he talked about Houston's DEFENSE.

"....second in the league in defensive efficiency. Houston is second in field goal percentage defense at 43.4 percent, second in 3-point attempts allowed at 14.6 per game, and fifth in defensive rebound rate at 75.2 percent."

"...losing Yao leaves a major hole at the offensive end. But if Mutombo's presence takes the defense to an even higher level, and the spark from the aforementioned Landry can make up some of the offense, the damage to the Rockets might be far less than initially feared."

"It's stunning to see the Rockets defending so well while incorporating three rookies (Landry, Aaron Brooks and Luis Scola) to the rotation and making heavy use of players like Tracy McGrady and Luther Head who aren't exactly renowned for their defensive chops. Give Adelman a ton of credit for realizing that he couldn't win in Houston the way he won in Sacramento, and give players like Rafer Alston and Shane Battier credit for holding the fort together while the kids figured things out. The Rockets may not be pretty to watch, but their suffocating defense might just lead them to a successful season in spite of Yao's absence."

As long as Rockets continue to play the great defense, they will have a chance against any team.

I really didn't expect this. I remember being angry for not getting Big Baby instead.

yeah Landry has REALLY surprised me too. he really is a steal for when we got him. we really hit the jackpot getting 2 rookies like scola and landry in the same year. I hope we make the playoffs just for the simple reason i want these 2 to get some playoff experience for next year. I seriously think we can make a run next year. we arent relying on unknown talent hopefuls (Swift, Spanoulis) and we arent relying on has-beens (Derek Anderson, Wesley, Francis, James, Juwan) etc to get us over the top. We are finally over jvg's hold he had over us, and the players and the fans now see adelman is the better coach and his system will work. Bobby Jackson was a great pick up too i hope he plays here next year. he was good with both t-mac and yao on the court.

This isn't good guys. We gotta hope that teams don't look into Landry too much so that we can keep him for cheap.

we'll probably have to use BJax's expiring contract next season to sign Landry in Summer 09. We don't want another Boozer or Arenas situation where a 2nd rounder leaves as a free agent.
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming

so what's 2008 telling you?

I want Hasheem Thabeet
He's 7'3" and 263lbs from UCONN
He played his senior year of high school in Houston.
Would help limit Yao's minutes 25-30 a game
Plus his name rhymes with Hakeem so that's cool

I think we will still be able to get him for pretty cheap.
We need to say thta we will match any offer and that will scare teams away.
I hope we can sign him with the bi annual exception so we can save the MLE for free agents.

Not sure if Rockets has a team option on Landry. But even if they don't, thanks to "Gilbert Arenas" provision, Rockets should have no problem in keepin Landry.
http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#37

Due to this provision, the maximum the other team can offer to Landry for the 1st year is the MLE and limited to a standard 8% rise in the 2nd year. The 3rd year onwards can be much higher but Rockets will still have a chance to match if they value Landry as higher the other team.

If you think Rockets need th MLE to sign a free agent, Landry is the free agent if he earn it with his performance from now to hopefully the playofs :)

Haha exactly. Only thing is, I'm pretty sure teams were already looking at Landry and this is just the media finally starting to catch on. That's gonna help me sleep at night anyway. Only GMs things like this might help are the ones that shouldn't be there. ... Who are also the ones who offer big contracts that end up killing both teams ... Crap. ... Crap crap crap. Back to not sleeping. :nonono:

Oh. Awesome! I think Landry is going to end up being at least a 4.5-7mil player, so that's cool. He'll be worth the MLE easy, I just hope we can sign him for less (and that it doesn't bother him if we do)

Wait so what is Landry's contract situation? I thought the team had a team-option on him next year?
