OT: Hurricane Gustav

I'm not sure if it will impact Houston much, but what is your take on it? Is it worth to board up for a Cat 3 in Houston?

I lived in Florida, so I know what a Hurricane can do, but I wasn't sure if Houston homes (older ones) are strong enough to hold up.

Yeah.. Labor Day Weekend in Houston doesn't sound good.

There is a lot of chance the hurricane might just go west. It is gonna get ugly.

According to the weather guy on Chron, it's only 20% likely to hit anywhere near Houston. More likely, as always, is Louisiana. No worry whatsoever for another 30 hours though.

It's not looking nice guys. Do prepare to get the hell out, just be pre-emptive.

Boarding up? Get real. I think the eye will probably run inbetween Lake Charles and Laffeyette. Houston will get rain for a day and a half probably. I stay in Shreveport now but used to stay in PAT and when we boarded up, it was only for Andrew which was freaking huge. Cat 3 is only dangerous if you're on the coast, or unless you have flimsy trees/branches or signs around your house.

However, it might be wise to get canned foods, batteries, flashlights, candles, etc b/c city power has a weird way of cutting off randomly during these things. It used to happen in PA a lot, but i'm not sure about htown.

We had that happen once and have had a giant wax stain on the monopoly board ever since.

Heck, I just had a temporary (~1.5 minutes) case of jitters from this (my apartment has a very very large flimsy glass window that I worried about on that super unlikely direct hit before remembering "duh i have insurance"), and I don't typically get hurricane jitters at all. Easy to see how someone else that only listens to weathermen and duiz could get a bit silly and go buy 5 crates of flashlights and 400 gallons of water in preparation. (Sorry vator ;) ) Actually, I think his new avatar hypnotized me. It's worked on billions and billions of other satisfied mcdonalds customers (you try and explain their success without hypnotism. "hey guys, come eat our cardboard!!! we added a new fat mixture for softening agent, and also some imitation pepper!!!")

I'm worried about Gustav as much as I'm worried about Russia invading Idaho. I'm convinced hurricanes have turned into a bit of an economic stimulus.
