OT: Apply Texas Question

Post#1 » by A.J. » Fri Oct 3, 2008 11:13 pm

I am doing my application right now for UT on ApplyTexas.com and they are asking for 2 essays and I am currently the 2 right now. I havent taken the SAT yet, but I am taking it tomorrow and I put UT as one of the schools to send my scores. Is there anything else I need to do? Im trying to get though with this before December, and also we havent gotten our class rank yet, so can I send my transript separately?

If you have taken any APs ( or will take in May ) make sure you send them as well. I basically got out of 3 semesters at UT with my AP credit, but I took and got credit for 11. And I don't really plan on graduating early, just having fun.

But less about me.

You have a bit of time before those apps are due, and its good that you are doing them now.

I didn't need to do this (I am a very strong writer) but if you struggle with writing AT ALL it may be in your best interests to hire someone with knowledge to proofread and give you pointers on your essays.

If you want a bit of help, drop me an email at ryanberney@mail.utexas.edu and I'd be happy to help you out.

On the SAT, if you haven't taken it yet, WRITE A 5 PARAGRAPH ESSAY!

I took the SAT twice, and the first time I got a 6/12 on my essay in the writing section, and a 2110 overall.

My friend who did test masters told me they told him to write a 5 paragraph essay. The essay I wrote on my other SAT was only 2.

I wrote that 5 paragraph essay, would up with a perfect 12/12 on the essay, a perfect 800 on the section, and a damn near perfect 2340 overall.

Study hard. I'm just perform unusually well on standardized tests and always have. If you aren't that way, make sure you get help, whether that be a tutor, a class, or just a book.

Most importantly, PRACTICE! And practice the same way you would take the test. Time yourself, only give yourself the allotted time on each section, and don't check the answers until you finish the test. The more you can recreate the testing environment and accustom yourself to it, the better you will do.

If your grades don't land you in the top 10%, extracurriculars, SATs, and essays are going to be your ticket to Texas.

You seem to be a damned good baseball player, make sure you play up that strength on your application and if possible in your essays.

Again, congratulations on choosing to apply to UT. It's not for everyone, but it is a fantastic school nonetheless.

Best of luck getting in, and if you have any more questions feel free to email me, PM me, or just post in this thread.

And yes, your high school should send your transcript to all the schools you are applying to shortly after christmas, and again after you graduate.

Make sure they know what schools you are applying to, make sure you pay them any money they require so they actually send said transcripts, and make sure you follow up and make sure everything is on its way.

Best of luck.

Wow, get on that as soon as you can. You're supposed to apply to UT in September. I applied in October and to get in, I had to attend summer school, which would have made me a sophomore.
I'm sorry I haven't been funny. I am not a comedian. I am Lenny Bruce.

Texas does do rolling admissions (they accept and decline your application as they come in) but you aren't penalized until the deadline, which I believe is mid to late december, although it changes year to year.

Get your application filled out ASAP like TMU said. My advice would be to get everything done by halfway through this month; having it done by December is too late in my opinion.

Get your resume together, your extra curricular activities/hours, any rec letters you may have, and make sure your essays are top notch...get your english teacher or someone to go over them with you. As for the SAT, take it, and make sure collegeboard doesn't screw you and they actually send it to UT on time. Go to your HS registrar office and ask them how your class rank and transcript will be handled. Also, if you have taken any community college hours, you may have to get the CC transcript sent separately from your HS transcript...it depends on whether they were dual credit hours or not...but just check with your registrar.
