Oh ok...we based on what you heard or probably know, is UT's communication school great?

i have no idea how you can quote me before my post

tell you the truth i don't know anything about it
most of my friends before college all went to engineering schoool (those that went to UT)
friends i met in college are mostly in engineering as well
know a few in chemistry, pre-med, pharmacy, business, math, physic, marketing, computer science, and that's about it

look at it this way UT is the #1 public university in TX so it can't be bad
everything here is above good IMO

If you are considering pre-med, you need to do a lot of research. When you're search for the best pre-med program, it's not simply looking at the number of science courses that's being offered - it's far beyond that. First, know which schools have a pre-med program. Then find out whether or not the school you're looking at has a strong science curriculum, a pre-med committee. There's a lot of websites (such as princetonreview.com) which provides tons of information. Doing all these research may be overwhelming if you do it on your own. So I recommend you to seek advice/help from your parents, teachers, school counselor, and friends/relatives who are currently attending college.

As much as I hate to say, academic reputation does carry some weight when you apply to medical schools. And most good schools in general have a good pre-med program. Most students try to set realistic goals, but I hope you don't shy away from applying to U.T simply because of your GPA.

Dude, I think every college freshman says they're pre-med at some point. Then they smash into 310M or whatever orgo 1 is called at their school, and things immediately change. I don't actually have a lot of experience with it, but I think almost any major can be called pre-med. You simply have to complete the chems, maths, physics, and bios that most med school require. I had 2 friends, one was psych pre-med and the other was math pre-med. Only one of them made it, but they're undergrad majors were in subjects they liked so they would put in the most effort, and that's essential.

Yes, you can major in just about anything and still be a pre-med student. Like you said, pre-med is just concentration. Sure, pretty much every college offers the pre-med courses (Intro Bio, General Chem, Organic Chem, and Physics), but medical schools are critical at where you took these courses and at what level of competition.

business - major in Economics, bust ur butt, and try to transfer to business school down the line.

so go to UT for the true college experience, to live in one of America's best cites, and to meet lifetime friends. Go to a&m to meet some skinheads and go cowtipping on the wkends.

You can always go the JUCO route. I went to Wharton for 2 years and it really helped with me getting use to the college experiance. A lot of my friends went straight to the Big schools and most got on Academic probation or got kicked out. College is a great experiance but it is also about attaining that Degree!!! By the way I love BAYLOR the ladies are HOT!!!!!!

1st off,

Pre-med is not a major!! It's like a "side-program" that helps you work in the med school pre-reqs. into your real major (Business, engineering, etc).

Also, on my previous post, I was a little mean by saying you couldn't get into the business school, but I was just being real (considering your situation).

I graduated from UT with a Psychology and am currently in LSU medical school. I'm one of the success stories of a liberal arts major in professional school, but let me remind you that it's rare. The percentages of non-biology majors in my class and in med school is low, period. But, with hard work and continued love for the Rockets, you can get in no problem!! =)

haha honestly if i put in the SAME time and effort i do into the rockets..but transferred it over to myself..i probably would be a HUGE success-but things just don't always work out the way we want haha. I mean, im not dumb.. i just made dumb decisions, got B's where i should have gotten A's and slacked. Now i KNOW what i need to do, i am making every college essay perfect so i could turn in my apps for the texas school within the next week when deadlines are in january. It's just that, if i don't get in with the major of my choice, i just thought i should be able to switch. I know a student who went to UT in some random major, took the main claasses and along with that took a set of science classes for premed. Then after he proved himself he was able to change his major and now hes in med school after scoring high on his mcat. I guess something like that only happens rarely. so basically the vibe I am getting is..if i dont get in, don't be mad, just work hard wherever im at? and hopefully i can transfer into a better school later?

i love UT, but i just used that as an example cuz its a texas school that most of us know.

thanks ya'll..you ppl are smart

go rockeets!

I go to UT right now. I'm in the business school(Finance major) and I was not top 10% when I applied. I also went to a school with a crazy high top 10% cutoff. It was like 4.4 on a 4.5 scale. I was right outside of that.

Don't go to A&M man. Seriously, it blows. No offense to the aggies on the board....but it blows.

UT has really great programs in basically everything. The business school was just bumped up to 6th in the nation by US News. Accounting is still #1.

The city is amazing. Perfect for college. Not too big like Houston. Not too small like CS or Lubbock and there is so much more to do.

My advice is to apply. Make your extra currics look super important and like you have vested a lot of time in them. Show leadership in any roles that you possibly can. Kill your essays. Get them reviewed by anyone who can help.

As far as what school you should apply to, i do not have much advice. I did business as my top choice and natural sciences 2nd. I figured I would take a shot at the b-school and luckily I got in. I am pretty sure that you are considered for your top choice first and if you do not get into it, you are considered for your second. I am not sure of this so definitely find out. If that is the case, I recommend putting the business school as your top choice for sure. It's so much harder to get into business via transfer than to just get in right away.

I was in the same boat last year during my senior year of high school. I was going to go to either A&M or UT, and I eventually chose UT back in March. I'm glad I chose to go to Austin, its pretty neat here and a lot of people to meet. Gameday is really crazy as i live down the street from the stadium, but its a cool experience with all the longhorn fever going wild. But it really depends what you wanna do in life, and other factors like where your friends are going and stuff. College though is definitely not high school so you can't bullsh*t your way through your classes. I'm halfway through my first batch of exams and man I need to study my ass off :-?

Ideally, your major already includes all the pre-reqs. My dad's wife was BME at syracuse. You never lived at Crossing Place did you????

When I was a senior in high school I would go visit my friend who lived at Moore Hill, and on gamedays that place was friggin crazy. The furniture in the common areas was rearranged, you could hear the crowd with the tv at full volume, and from 21st to west campus was just one big party if they won.

I changed my mind. I decided that I should stay home and go to UH.
This planning for college is harder than I thought.

You don't apply separately to the summer program; you can only be offered it. If your grades aren't good enough to get into UT straight away, but not bad enough to get offered CAP, then you could get offered the summer program...in which case you should capitalize on that opportunity and take it. I've heard nothing but amazing things about summer school here at UT.

As far as what majors to apply to, the easiest schools to get into here are Liberal Arts, Natural Sciences, or Education...so those are your best bets. You can always internally transfer if you get in and want to change to another major.

I would recommend against that. I think you do better working toward your intended area of study. So if you want to be a mechanical engineer but can't get into Cockrell, then go somewhere else you can get into. The 1st 2 years of engineering programs at most schools are the same. Some of your courses might not transfer, but most of them will. Anyhoo, this is just my opinion. McCoombs and Cockrell can be tough to get into, and the nursing, law, and pharmacy(personal experience) are even harder, but everyone gets into liberal arts. That's why you have 10,000 government and political science majors there.

King Roosk, so what you are saying is that it is not a BAD idea to apply to an easier school at UT and transfer? because i heard thats what i should do and then transfer majors because most freshman are undecided anyways and switch anyways.
And as of now im lookin to do med so all i need to do is take the required classes for med school. unless of course..i change my mind haha

Hmm, I'm not sure what do you mean by "easier school?" Since you are looking at med, let me tell you this. Medical schools hate to see applicants take their premed courses at an easier school. If you are to follow the above plan, do not take your premed requirements until you transfer to a "better school."
