Rockets Team Statistics

Post#1 » by TMU » Fri Nov 28, 2008 12:04 am

I know it's early in the season but here's some of our early problems:

Team Shooting - Offense
PPG: 93.8 (25th)
FG%: 42.68% (28th)

3PTM: 6.3 (13th)
3PT%: 35% (13th)
FT%: 81.91% (2nd)
PPS*: 1.18 (20th)
Adj. FG%**: 47% (22nd)

Team Shooting - Defense
PPG: 90.6 (1st)
FG%: 43.14% (7th)
3PTM: 4.4 (1st)
3PT%: 30% (1st)
PPS*: 1.12 (1st)
Adj. FG%**: 46% (4th)

Rebounding
Own Off. Board: 11.1 (18th)
Opp. Off. Board: 10.5 (8th)
Own Def. Board: 32.9 (4th)
Opp. Def. Board: 31.4 (18th)

Miscellaneous
Assists: 18.1 (18th)
Blocks: 3.1 (29th)

Own TO: 13.6 (10th)
Opp. TO: 12.9 (27th)

* PPS: points per shot
** Adj. FG%: adjusted field goal percentage

Problems:
- Unable to produce a consistent offense; poor shooting, questionable shot selection.
- Unable to force turnovers; which leads to our lack of easy transition buckets.
- Poor ball movement.
- Give up a good amount of offensive boards.
- Lack of shot-blocking; not much of an issue but certainly nice if we can improve.

One interesting note is that our defense is actually pretty good. When we described our defense as terrible, it was perhaps an illusion generated from our piss-poor offense.

Pretty much the norm from previous seasons except our offense is even worse. I'm really starting to think Artest might finish the season shooting under 38% (right now at 35, so I'm being generous), and all while leading our team in shot attempts.

And that last statement is likely our problem. Yao and T-Mac have to take the reigns of this team and be aggressive and assertive offensively. If Yao can get 16-17 shot attempts and McGrady around 17 (in an ideal world, Yao would shoot more than McGrady, but Yao will more likely get more FT attempts, and it's harder to get him the ball than it is to McGrady, who obviously is a perimeter player), then everything else will fall into place. If McGrady takes around 17 shot attempts, that'd give him around 20+ points, and Yao were to get around 16-17, then you can give him around 22+ points. Roles will then be established, Artest a third option, Brooks the actual spark off the bench, Scolandry the garbage men around the basket, and Alston to never shoot the ball :D

That's what we envisioned with this team, if Mac and Yao assert themselves like we know they can, or capable of, then everything else on the offensive end of the floor will fall into place.

Defense hasn't really been a problem b/c we're actually holding most teams to low point totals, it's the Def. rebounding that has been a problem. We're actually doing better than that category b/c everyone is staying back to grab the rebound. This hurts our fastbreak pts, however. Our lack of a good big man (other than Yao) is hurting our blocks and if we had one good big man, he could grab the def. rebound by himself and push the fast break.

How's kevin love doing? I remember him at UCLA and he had some sweet outlet passes.
