The richest club in the world can just outright buy the rights to every single player in the world. So Soccer transaction doesn't transfer to any other sports in the world. Real Madrid is doing something even the Yankees couldn't. They just paid 100 millions for the "rights" to Kaka and then 140 something millions for the "rights" to Christiano Ronaldo. And thats not even including salary... just pure ridiculousness.
OK so that proves that people are willing to spend ridiculous money, how does that make basketball a different business?
You can't just "buy" Yao Ming like that. Rockets can offer him more money than any other team in the NBA after his contract is over. In addition, if the Cavs want to sign and trade Yao Ming, equal salary has to be coming back. You can't just offer 140 million dollars like soccer clubs. That's why its so rare to see superstar type players bolt.
With the cavs current salary structure, they probably won't be able to offer Yao max money. Unless Yao is willing to go to Ohio for significantly less money, he ain't going nowhere.
