Instead of relating Rocket's schedule against teams in the West, it is more accurate to see them vs winning teams. Of the 19 games played by Rockets,
14 (6-8) of them were against winning teams (0.5 records or better) and Rockets won all 5 games vs teams with losing records. Rockets look very competitive to me.
And if you look at teams above rockets on current standing:
Laker 14-3. 17 games. Of which only
10 (8-2) games were against winning team. They lost one game to team with losing records.
Suns 14-5. 19 games. Only
9 (6-3) games were against winning team. They lost 2 games to team with losing records.
Nuggets 14-5. 19 games. Only
11 (8-3) games were against winning team. They lost 2 games to teams with losing records.
Blazers 12-8. 20 games. Only
10 (4-6) games were against winning teams. They lost 2 games to teams with losing records.
Jazz 10-7. 17 games. Only
9 (3-6) games were against winning teams. They lost 1 game to teams with losing records.
Spurs 9-7. 16 games. Only
9 (5-4) games were against winning teams. They lost 3 games to teams with losing records.
I see Lakers, Nuggets are the 1st tier. Suns' position is a bit inflated due to their soft schedule and Rockets have chance to catch up. If Rockets win 40-50% share of their games vs winning teams and will 90-10% of their game vs team with losing records, they will be in the playoff.
