David Andersen is being under-utilized and underplayed

Post#1 » by chrisbh » Mon Dec 14, 2009 11:45 am

David Andersen is receiving little if any court time for the rockets this year. When he has been given minutes, he has excelled scoring and grabbing boards. Is he being restricted as he is a rookie or is this the general philosophy of the rockets to not give minutes to a player that shines in his few touches he gets. Discuss

no he aint that good, i was pullin for him to up matt bonner like numbers. he's still inconsistently productive in the limited minutes he gets, but has to work on his game, his shooting form is off, cant grab onto rebounds , needs a better post game, other stuff to do . im hoping in the 2nd half of the year he can improve a bit and maybe in the offseason he'll work on his game a lot mroe

I'm not sure which Anderson u are watching.

David Anderson cannot hold his rebounds... Inconsistent. Lack the mass. Cannot seem to get position in the post, his shooting is on and off. Nice J inside the arc though... at least he seems to not get fouls that easily as before. He will be good but he needs time to get used to the NBA.

The letter Z and space bar are being under utilized in a much greater fashion than our own Aussie. ;)

Andersen always played power forward in Europe. He is simply not a center and never was one. Rockets play him out of position. He was never able to handle physical play, inside defense, and rebounding that is required to play center in Euroleague. Yet the Rockets try to make him do so in NBA.

I don't think Rockets scouted him at all and they just signed him as an emergency because Yao was out. He was never a center in Euroleague and actually he was considered soft on defense and rebounding in Euroleague for a PF even. That being said he is a very talented offensive player and a coach like Adelman should be able to utilize him on offense much more than he has.

He has sucked all season, his only good game came against the Lakers, where they left him wide open for all his shots.

I'm serious. I'll rather see Dorsey get some burn over Andersen.

Andersen is a soft outside shooting big man who cant shoot 3s. I rather have Channing Frye.

I do think that David Andersen is being under-utilized, but it is not due to some vendetta to hold him down or play him out of position.

Everyone knew that Damage Assessment would need time to acclimate to the NBA game. If the Rockets had been playing worse, or if Chuck Hayes had not been playing as well as he has then DA would probably have been given more minutes.

The thing with the Rockets is that Adelman is going with whomever steps up for each game. Seeing as how the team has been winning more often than not - and comptetive in many of the losses - that does not lead to a lot of on-court time just to get a guy acclimated to the game. If we had been playing worse then DA would probably have seen a dramatic increase in minutes.

Here's the positive - obviously he's playing well in enough in practice and is impressing the coaches enough that he is part of the team's rotation. He's getting his chances, but if he's not doing well and another player is doing better then Adelman is going with the other player.

David Andersen will be a valuable member of this roster. Make no mistake about it. It won't happen instantly, but no one expected that.

Actually - I take that back. He is a valuable member of this roster. Some around here are too tough on him this early in his NBA career.

David andersen is a work in progress. His fundamentals is not there. Whatever worked in Europe isnt really working in the nba. He needs to transition his game so it'll take time. He usually moves his feet too much, too many steps and hes giddy under the basket. He isn't able to box out properly especially against most nba centers, maybe its his strength and conditioning. He' also plays out of position alot, the guy needs to work on his post up, but hes more of a shooter so he tends to go to the three point line and chuck a bad three. His shot doesn't look like its smooth, its more like a jerk shot from the three point line. I think he should get closer and find a spot he can shoot a better percentage shot. But to his credit, he looks like hes trying hard whenever he's out there.

1. (Claps Mr E.)

2. I like that my nickname for him is catching on.

3. I have posted here many times that he is not, and never was known for defensive prowess. In Europe, he was a solid defender, but no Chuck Hayes or Batman. And I said, he's not a pounder, he's a more finesse player, his extended range, and sweet, (If somewhat inconsistent so far) jumpshot is what he is known for. If the shot's dropping, there's no big man in the lane, as they have to step out to guard him. Damage Assesment is like nearly any rookie coming in to the NBA. And he needs time to adjust. I would not be adverse to a dump to the D-League for ten games or so, to help him along.

Damage Assesment will never be a Yao, Howard, O'Neal, Ewing, Robinson, or Olajuwon. He does have the ability to be a sort of Nowitski type player.

Anderson is an old rookie. he is 29. I don't expect him to be a top player but a decent role player in future.

I hope he can be a Scola in the making. This season is probably for him to adapt to the NBA.

Return to Houston Rockets
