Rank the current Rockets based on their defense

Post#1 » by Guy986 » Sat Apr 3, 2010 3:05 am

Excluding Yao and Mike Harris, rank the current Rockets based on their defense from best to worst. This is entirely subjective so rank them however u like using whatever criteria you want.

IMO

Chuck Hayes
Shane Battier
Jared Jeffries
Kyle Lowry
Trevor Ariza

Luis Scola
Jordan Hill
Hilton Armstrong
Chase Budinger
Jermaine Taylor
Aaron Brooks

Kevin Martin
David Andersen

I think theres a seperation between the top 5 and the rest. But overall, i believe Chuck is our best defender and Damage Assessment our worst.

I'll like to see how different our opinions are.

Very nice list. I like the separation between your top 5 and the remaining players.

I think Hayes is not only the best defender on the team but he's also pound per pound the best defender ever. It's a shame how poor his offense is relative to his defense.

I also think Scola is a better defender than he gets credit for. He doesn't block shots or has lateral quickness, but he understands how to take charges and has pretty quick hands.

I would group Birdinger with Martin and Anderson. Unlike the latter two, Bird puts more effort on defense, but he just doesn't have the talent to match his drive.

Finally, I think Lowry is better than Jeffries.

My top 5 would be:
1. Sucky Hayes
2. Shane Battier
3. Kyle Lowry
4. Jared Jeffries
5. Trevor Ariza

How are you going to put Jeffries in the top 3 when he can't even stay on the court ? lol.

Hayes is definitely the best, he's an All-NBA caliber defender, unfortunately he won't get the recognition for such an award because of his lack of offense ironically.

Nice topic....

As good of a perimeter defender Shane is, I have to give the title to the Chuckwagon. At 6'6'' he holds it down in the post. "MANS GAME!!"

Solid list though. However I think Lowry is clearly our 2nd best perimeter defender. That stretch he was out of the lineup was just dreadful.

1.) Hayes
2.) Battier
3.) Lowry
4) Jefferies
5.) Ariza - Overrated on D. Gambles a lot. Defineable has room to grow though.

The rest of list JVG looks alright but Hilton? - Idk... havent seen much but if he was any good he wouldnt have been dumped by the Hornets. New Orleans doesnt exactly have the deepest front court.

Lowry, Hayes, and Jeffries can be counted on to slow down any guy on a given night. Battier used to be able to straight up shut cats down. Ariza gets a lot done with his athleticism, but he lacks the defensive smarts of the other four.

Seriously, does anyone remember Battier when JVG was here?? If anyone was hot, Jeff would just switch them over and that would be it. Even Kobe Bryant didn't seem scary when Battier was on him one on one back in the day.

Yeah, he was badass back then. Think the injuries have slowed him down some is the problem. His D relies heavily on anticipation and smarts thank goodness, so he's still upper-ech defense for the moment. Ideally he'll teach Ariza how to play before he hits his expiry date.
