Max Contracts 2010

Post#1 » by Mr. E » Tue Apr 6, 2010 2:47 pm

Lots of talk about free agents, sign & trades, etc. A lot of it seems to center around players who will get the Maximum contract amount.

As far as I see it there will only be two Max deals this offseason: LeBron & Wade. I just don't see Bosh, Amare, Johnson or anyone else approaching Max money. Yeah, they'll get good deals, but the free-wheeling days of NBA spending seem to be over. I'm expecting a lot of disappointment from players who will not get what they think they are worth.

I agree. I think that the CBA negotiations will hold alot of teams with tons of cap space back from making ridiculous offers...atleast right out of the gate. Ofcourse, it only takes one guy to offer a Rashard Lewis like deal to get most of the league to go full (Please Use More Appropriate Word).

Yeah - there will still be guys overpaid, but I don't think that will happen as badly as past years.

The Knicks will be the team to watch in the overpaying department if they miss out on LeBron/Wade/Bosh (which I think that they will). We'll see if Walsh overpays for someone like Joe Johnson or Amare.

Don't get me wrong - those are both good players, but I think that their biggest hope of a payday approaching the Max is if the teams who were on the 2010 Cap Room Plan strike out early on.

List of max players this season:

Team Player Type
Atlanta Joe Johnson Maximum
Boston Kevin Garnett Maximum
Boston Paul Pierce Maximum
Cleveland LeBron James Maximum
Cleveland Shaquille O'Neal Maximum
Dallas Dirk Nowitzki Maximum
Denver Carmelo Anthony Maximum
L.A. Lakers Kobe Bryant Maximum
Miami Jermaine O'Neal Maximum
Miami Dwyane Wade Maximum
Milwaukee Michael Redd Maximum
New York Tracy McGrady Maximum
Not In Use Allan Houston Maximum
San Antonio Tim Duncan Maximum
Toronto Chris Bosh Maximum

http://www.realgm.com/src_maxplayers.php

Out of that list, Shaq, KG, and JO, although not performing at a very high level this season, are all still under contracts signed back in their primes. Michael Redd I thought was overpaid even when he was healthily chucking away. T-Mac, well, we know his story. And, Allan Houston??? Would someone please explain to me how his contract is still on the books?

It is interesting to note that the four most discusses FAs, Lebron, Wade, Bosh, and Joe Johnson, are all currently under Max contracts, even Joe Johnson and Bosh, whom many deem not worthy of a Max. I don't think they deserve the Max either (maybe you can make a case for Bosh), but I'm pretty sure that they will get a Max contract in the end.

Chicago, New Jersey, New York, Miami, LA Clippers, Sacramento, Minnesota, and Oklahoma (maybe) have room for a max deal. New York might be the only team that could offer 2. James and Wade will each get a max contract, that's for sure. I don't think Bosh is a deserving athlete, but someone with throw the additional megabucks because of his youth.

And it looks like the Knicks are screwed. I really wish they could get LeBron just to see some reactions but it they don't acquire him, I feel Walsh will overpay for either Amare or Johnson, if not both.

As for Allan Houston, he signed a 6-year $100m contract back in 2000. His contract should be off the books. Not to mention that Houston should be a lock in the HOF. After all, the league has established a rule to contain his greatness.

If knicks sign Amare and say johnson. Would they still be able to retain lee?

If they could sign Bosh and Johnson, they'd be an alright team.

I looked it up, and it seems that he actually signed that contract back in 2001, so I have no idea why RealGM still has that up there, especially since the rest of that list doesn't look outdated in any way.
